No, any mil-spec buffer system should work. You will need the buffer system though as the BCG will still travel back in to the buffer tube during cycling.

What size barrel is this designed for?

This will work with any barrel that has a carbine length gas system and a gas block journal diameter of .750".

The gas block included with MPN:FGAA-03306 is not adjustable and it will fit your M&P15 as long as it uses a standard .750 gas block.
