While correct fitment always has some degree of personalization for comfort, a common consensus in the community is typically upsizing two sizes (in this case a 36) that will allow for some adjustment where necessary.

I ordered the size 40 in. but I had to go all the way to the innermost hole, instead of the middle hole, Please advise on correct size.

If you are already at the end hole for fitment, a size 38 should put you back at the middle hole for the same fitment.
