Is the eye relief unlimited? And if the battery dies does it just turn the illumination off so you still have a usable sight?

No the eye relief is 5" - 3.35" through the magnification ranges. The glass is etched and is still usable without illumination.

Leapers does not state if there is a recoil limit for the Leapers UTG 1-8x28mm Combat Rifle Scope SCP3-18IEMDQ. To confirm compatibility of the Leapers UTG 1-8x28mm Combat Rifle Scope SCP3-18IEMDQ with the recoil of a 45-70 Govt I recommend contacting Leapers.
