The mounting plate is attached as it is the base of the unit, but can be removed. It is usable without the base, but it is the widest part of the loader and is meant to make the most surface area contact with whatever it is resting on. So it provides a lot of stability when using the product on a surface like a table or bench.

It isn't. The base plate does however have holes on the corners for bolts if you wish to attach the loader to the table. However, it's unnecessary in my opinion and you'll be just fine holding it in place with just your left hand while the right hand cranks/loads.
