Does this mount directly on the pistol or is there an adapter plate interface needed?

The Meprolight MPO Pro-S includes an RMSc adapter plate that will mount to RMSc cut slides. The optic will then mount to the adapter plate. As long as you have an RMSc cut slide you will be able to utilize this optic.

What is the white mark on the view side of the unit? can it be used instead of a rear sight and together with the front sight as backup sight?

That is the idea. Kinda like the "dot the I" sights. Actual point of impact will vary depending on your front sight height though.
