Any "Colt SMG" pattern magazine should work (CMMG, Brownells, NERD, etc)

Are the universal adaptations or only colt mags

The Pro Mag AR-15 / M16 9MM Magazine Adapter will only work with Colt style 9mm magazines. However, there are many different manufacturers that use the Colt 9mm magazine pattern such as CMMG, NERD, and Brownells.

This will fit DPMS AR-15 receivers. It will not fit their .308 receivers.

I order one of these it came with three pieces the two polymer pieces and a piece of stamped metal what is the metal piece used for

This comes with the two-piece adapter, and a center piece that is only for keeping the sides from bowing in when not installed.
