What is behind the mirror if it is broken? Is it a steel plate or would someone have access to the contents simply by breaking the mirror?

This is just a concealment device. Tactical Walls does offer a safe that will fit inside the unit though it only replaces the small insert.

Can an AR15 be stored easily in here?

The larger insert can accommodate a firearm up to 40" in length. Most AR carbines and some rifles can fit in this space.

Yes, the design is to fit between the studs leaving only the vertical dimension to be cut from the drywall.
