Scout scopes have to be mounted within the listed eye relief to be able to use and see through them. The Marlin 336 can use a scout scope, but almost all of them should be drilled and tapped over the receiver. This allows the user to mount a scope over the receiver in the standard position. If you plan on mounting a scope in that position it can NOT be a scout scope because it will not be usable because of the eye relief.
Due to the long eye relief, scout scopes are mounted forward. Your 336 has mount holes on the receiver for mounting a normal optic. It ejects out the side, so a normal scope on the top of the receiver POSES NO PROBLEM. If you had an M1, M1A, Mosin Nagant etc it would be a different story. The only reason to put an LER optic on a 336 is if you prefer to carry the rifle with your hand around the receiver. If this is your intent, simply get this scope and a scout mount.
