Can I shoot this round through my 12 gauge maverick model 88 that has a smooth bore? Worried about shooting slugs through a bore that's not rifled. — 1 Answer

Yes you can. There are 2 kinds of slugs. Foster slugs or rifled slugs are most common and usually cheaper. The rifling is on the slug not the barrel. Then you have Sabot Slugs and those are for rifled barrel shotguns. These are smooth slugs because the rifling again is on the barrel not the slug. These will usually be more aerodynamic and are more accurate further out. People use these mainly to hunt deer and things like that. A foster slug is more useful in the defensive shotgun situations. If you want a large chunk of lead to just sling in something that's where these come in. Most have a small cavity in the nose so they expand on impact to deliver massive energy transfer. Now you can shot a Sabot Slug in a smooth bore shotgun but it will only be accurate for extremely short ranges like 10 yards and in maybe. Some people will have better luck. Hope that helps
