Will this fit a pre 64 Winchester model 94?

The XS Sight Systems Lever Scout Mount fits Winchester 94 AE models with rear sight dovetail 4" from receiver. Rail will fit on Win 94 Top Eject IF both of the following are met: rear sight dovetail must be 3.8"-4" from barrel/receiver junction line and be willing to drill the two required screw holes in the manner the AE models are drilled.

will it work on my 1961 winchester 94, 30-30?

No, this will not fit the 1961 Winchester 94, because the angle of ejection on the older models is different.

As long as the receiver is drilled and tapped, you should have no problems, nice old rifle you have there!

do I need to drill and tap the barrel or is this a direct mount using the existing hardware

XS includes a hard, plastic punch tool in the package. First, you use the punch to drive out the OEM rear sight from its dovetail mounting slot in the barrel. (Remember, the dovetail is wider on one side than the other; so you have to drive it in the correct direction.) Next, use the same punch to install a 'female' mounting bracket into the barrel's dovetail. Last, attach the rail to the 'female' mounting bracket with a machine screw. If I can do it, which I did, anyone can!
