Rob the independent semi-liberal moderate's Review of Aero Precision 2-Stage Trigger Set

First, this Aero Precision 2-Stage is a Schmid trigger with Aero branding. This is not a bad thing, but because Schmid makes a fairly popular and inexpensive 2-stage trigger, identical trigger, disconnector & hammer sets are sold under the branding of other companies.

My trigger has almost 3 distinct stages. There is a severe drop in pull weight between the two stages, such that I can let go of the trigger and it will stay positioned between the stages. After over 100 trigger pulls, this strange pressure dead-zone still exists. The first and second stage started out rougher than some other 2 stage triggers I've tried, but the pull itself smoothed out fairly well during this time. Maybe this will go away with more breaking in, but I'm wondering if this is a defect of my particular trigger. I do know that this odd trigger behavior isn't something I'd want for a gun meant for serious use.

I can see a potential for an accidental discharge if the trigger is assumed to be at the start of the the 1st stage, but instead is stuck at the start of the second stage when a trigger pull begins. (This could occur if a trigger pull was started, then stopped part way through, but the trigger didn't return.) This issue existed with alternate springs, and in an alternate lower receiver. It was properly lubricated. Altering these factors did not alter this odd behavior.

Of the two stage triggers I have, this is the only one with sear surfaces that have so significantly rounded of edges, and don't appear to have had their faces ground and polished to any notable degree. (My 2 stage trigger experience includes Timney, Del-Ton, Hiperfire, Geissele, Stern, and LaRue. Probably another I'm forgetting.)
Pros:
  • distinct stages
Cons:
  • drop in pull weight between stages
Best Used for:
  • Range use
