I have owned Monarchs, Kahles, Minox HG's and now the Alpen Rainier 10x42 in that order. I think each one was a step up in quality. The Alpen have the best resolution, clarity and color of any of the binoculars I have previously owned. I spoke with an individual at the Alpen facility which gave me enough favorable information that I decided to sell the Minox HG's and purchase the Alpen Rainiers. I have not been sorry at all. I like the attached lens covers, the smooth mechanics and the adjustable eye cups. If you were to step up in quality you would have to double the price. Try them out before you buy because the frame may not fit your face/eyes as well as some of the other high dollar glasses. I am not saying they are bad in that respect but there are some I think fits my frame a little better. For the money I think they are great glasses. I am very pleased. If I lost them I would buy another pair.
Pros: Good resolution, color and mechanics.
Cons: A little heavy.
Would recommend: No

These binocs are significantly brighter than my 1980's era leitz 7x50's, which is amazing. they are sharp to the edge. Colours are perfect. Completely outclass Nikon Monarchs, better than Khales or Kowa. On par with Ziess Classics, but brighter! I liked them so much, I ordered the 10X42's as well.
Pros: Bright, razor sharp, wide field, solid
Cons: heavy
Would recommend: Yes
