These packs are more ergonomic and more robust than the Coleman & Rubbermaid versions.

Manufacturer claims that these work much better than the alternatives. I decided to test their claims.

I used 2 identical Rubbermaid 48 qt coolers and two digital thermometers (known to read the same temp).

I used 3 large Coleman Blue Ice packs for comparison - total weight just over 5 lbs.

I froze the Coleman and Arctic Ice pack (5 lb)in a very cold freezer for 72 hours prior to the test. I placed the 3 Coleman units in one cooler and the 5 lb Arctic Ice pack in the other. I placed identical plastic containers on top of the cool packs and then placed the digital thermometers on top of those. Closed lids and away we go.

I recorded the temperature in each cooler every few hours. The temperatures were identical each time I looked - right up until the packs were cold no more (happened at the same time).

Conclusion
Manufacturer's claims of superior performance are hype. The Arctic Ice packs are more ergonomic and durable than the other brands (will undoubtedly last much longer) but they do cost several times more.

Optics Planet prices are cheaper than Wal-Mart, so if the benefits appeal to you they may be worth the additional cost, and this is the place to get them.
