DRChin's Review of Athlon Optics Argos BTR 8-34x56mm Side Focus Rifle Scope

This Athlon scope is first, massive, and quality built for a precision rifle. Yet, the 56mm bell will gather plenty of light if shooting game at sunrise or sunset, and the image is BRIGHT. I have mine mounted on a Savage 10BA Stealth in 308 win, using Leupold MED mounts, however, still have half inch clearance between Objective Lens and barrel. (I consider this too high and will ideally be getting LOW mounts). The feel of the windage and elevation detentes are positive and audible, the focus and zoom rings smooth and firm, with NO inactive play. Image is crystal clear and bright through zoom range, however the 34x power is a bit insane, and only really helpful on a bench when spotting your hits. One thing that is a detractor is that the eye pupil is relatively narrow, and even more so when at higher power, so the aid of an adjustable cheek -riser for a positive weld is very helpful if spotting in a hurry. I do appreciate that the illumination is relatively demur, and only provides more than adequate brightness when in low-light conditions to differentiate crosshairs from a dark background. (Some other owners complain, and might prefer overpowering glare, or like extra-brightness, even in daylight shooting to animate their scope picture). Right now, I am burning in this new rifle, and initially bore sighted at 100yds, hits are a bit scattered, esp with heavy round nosed bullets, but the FMJ pointed cartridges are grouping very nicely. Still feeling like I can rely on the glass and mounts, and the issue with my groups are with the round selections and cooking off this barrel, until I find what my barrel likes to send downrange most accurately. Will be happy to provide a follow-up report, but initially, I don't think I'll be using the lifetime warranty any time soon . . . I don't think you'd be embarrassed or compromising much with this investment . . . it will leave you enough change to buy a few additional magazines and accessories for your kit with the savings compared to comparable high priced scopes.
Pros:
  • Quality and Build and VALUE
Cons:
  • Relatively narrow eye pupil at high power
Best Used for:
  • Precision, LONG distance High Power Rifle
