Just sayin': This Scope may just out-shoot you or your rifle

Written on Mar 05, 2020

This Athlon scope is first, massive, and quality built for a precision rifle. Yet, the 56mm bell will gather plenty of light if shooting game at sunrise or sunset, and the image is BRIGHT. I have mine mounted on a Savage 10BA Stealth in 308 win, using Leupold MED mounts, however, still have half inch clearance between Objective Lens and barrel. (I consider this too high and will ideally be getting LOW mounts). The feel of the windage and elevation detentes are positive and audible, the focus and zoom rings smooth and firm, with NO inactive play. Image is crystal clear and bright through zoom range, however the 34x power is a bit insane, and only really helpful on a bench when spotting your hits. One thing that is a detractor is that the eye pupil is relatively narrow, and even more so when at higher power, so the aid of an adjustable cheek -riser for a positive weld is very helpful if spotting in a hurry. I do appreciate that the illumination is relatively demur, and only provides more than adequate brightness when in low-light conditions to differentiate crosshairs from a dark background. (Some other owners complain, and might prefer overpowering glare, or like extra-brightness, even in daylight shooting to animate their scope picture). Right now, I am burning in this new rifle, and initially bore sighted at 100yds, hits are a bit scattered, esp with heavy round nosed bullets, but the FMJ pointed cartridges are grouping very nicely. Still feeling like I can rely on the g

Essential Cheek Weld Regained!

Written on Mar 07, 2015

If you've mounted a scope, especially if using i.e. -Quick Detach Mounts onto a Picatinny rail, and retained your iron sights, this is the accessory you need to maintain a solid cheek-weld to your stock giving you a better sight picture. The fast and securely adjusting cheek riser enables a natural and quick positioning of your eye to sight line to reduce any parallax errors when on optics, and when the irons might be used, a quick loosening of the twin knurled knobs and slam down of the riser on the guide tracks returns you back to ideal iron sight level. Adjustability is important, especially if your rifle is used by shooters other than you. Made of high quality glass impregnated plastics, the accessory is strong and light. I am not sure what attachments I might use on the dual sided accessory rails, (magazine clip?), but they’re there. Nicely styled, I actually performed some gunsmithing with custom sanding of the interior of the riser mount (meant to fit one of two style telescopic AR stocks) to fit my Ruger TD stock to provide the support I needed, yet retained all the functionality of the original design

BDU for YOU!

Written on Mar 07, 2015

Want a no-nonsense BDU Patrol Cap, this one by Propper may fit the bill, literally. Short stiff brim enables shading from oncoming lights or sun with a tilt of the head. At this price, when on sale, one can afford to keep a couple around for various jobs, even an upgraded painters hat to keep drips off the safety glasses when under the paint. Be sure to measure your head with a tape rule, and order proper size, as there is no adjustment feature on this hat, and no elasticity. One thing you might do is spray it with clear waterproofing, as it will otherwise simply absorb rain, and the cloth's weave is tight enough to serve as a rain hat, and if brim is reversed, will keep drips from doing down your neck.

Will hug your sidearm if correct fit.

Better construction than the "Uncle Mike" variations, especially with the edge finishing of nylonb webbing vs. overlock stitching. I did find one pistol's rear ramp sight catching on webbing until I stitched it down flush with button thread for smoother snagless presentation.
Wish website would offer a way to enter your sidearm with/without sights or laser and have it specify the holster you need. I bought two sizes, and fortunately had two different pistols that they could work with.
Wish there was a way to cant the holster to hold the degree desired for smoother draw. Will evaluate durability after a season of CCW wear.

Best standard rifle sling

Written on Jan 04, 2015

If you've ever trained properly by using a sling for more than carrying your rifle, i.e. - learned how to properly brace and support your frame with strategic tension to relieve and steady muscles on your weak-side for a better sight hold), THIS is the sling for you. It adjusts easily and simply once properly attached (with a twist, if you've not rotating swivel sling points), to allow you to compensate for change of clothing and bulk on the arms, etc. or if another person is firing your weapon. Simple and effective. Gets the job done and should last as it's made with quality milspec webbing.
