Most Helpful Positive Review Great with the illuminator
Decent nvm for the money. The gain is pretty sensitive and a pain to set right. The unit works great in twilight or with a bright moon but requires the illuminator to se anything at all with just starlight. The illuminator works very well and the over all picture quality is very good considering the...

OK at the price, but a bit limited for use

by DWY, from WA, United States Written on January 8, 2019
The one I received had a bit of a problem, but OP customer service
gave 5 star service on correcting. Might be rating a bit lower as
I have, in the past, had access to some Special Ops NV goggles that
were astonishing but of course I could not afford them now. Sigh.
Anyway, as others have noted, these are a bit limited in range, but
you can see what is going on in the back yard so if that is what you
need, they will do it at a great price point.

ATN DNVM Digital Night Vision 4X Monocular

by tom, from IL, United States Written on November 6, 2017
Decent product for the price and for what it is. It doesn't have a great depth of field but is pretty good at looking at one object. Works better at close distances with the IR light on. It's a nice toy to have around to look out at the back yard at night to see what the dogs are barking at. I would not recommend for use on looking for objects at a distance.
Pros:
  • Nice for the price, especially at short distance using the IR.
Cons:
  • Poor depth of field and not good for distance viewing.
Best Used for:
  • Close observation with the IR.

Great Digital Unit for Fixed Range Viewing

by Outdoorsman Hunter, from CO, United States Written on October 13, 2017
I purchased this Digital unit to replace and old Gen 1 NV unit and because of the variable intensity control and color format. Use is Mountain Woods outdoor activities and Elk and Deer scouting. Found the digital black and white plus color viewer to be good on the eyes, 4x range was as expected, images were clear with IR and daylight. I found the balance in image focus and IR illumination intensity to be too sensitive, needing to be adjusted with very small changes in the viewing distance or level of darkness. This for me, looking continuously different distances through the woods and terrain light levels, was a distracting and not satisfactory. I also found the controls to be a bit challenging with gloves on. If you are viewing fixed distance scenes, this unit in it's digital color format and 4x distance clarity would likely be an excellent choice.
Pros:
  • Dightal, Color, clear viewing distance, ergonomics, Price
Cons:
  • Image focus and IR balance, gloved operation
Best Used for:
  • Fixed distance viewing
Would recommend: Yes

Good quality, not versatile enough.

by Joe, Verified Owner from MN, United States Written on August 6, 2017
This is a very well made night vision monocular, although I decided that it was not very useful for my applications. It focuses very clearly, the features are nice (like the brightness adjustment,) and the infrared is very discreet. I was also very impressed with how well it works as a camera with the video output cable. However, the device itself is too bulky to carry on my person easily, I felt the range was either too far or not far enough, and it left my viewing eye completely blinded at night due to the brightness of the screen. It also does not work particularly well in the woods. It does come with a pretty decent carrying case but is still not tactical enough for me to carry on a belt or with the shoulder strap (which also does not detach from the pouch.) The two ranges in which I was actually very impressed with its ability were the graveyard and a typical suburban backyard. If you need to see what is going in your neighbors' yard at night without drawing attention to yourself this is the thing for you. It works perfect looking out from a deck and over a fence. Overall I wouldn't discourage anyone from buying this night-vision monocular as it's a very quality product for the price I just hope its particular functions suit your needs.
Pros:
  • Comfortable, clear, video out-put
Cons:
  • Size, range, versatility

Good for the Price

by Kennyjoe, from AR, United States Written on April 16, 2017
This is my first night vision purchase so I can only compare it to older generation scopes I used in the military decades ago. With that said, I am impressed with how well this little scope sees in the dark. One thing you should be aware of is that it doesn't "see" well looking through a glass window. You need to be outside in order to see any distance over 25 ft. Outside I can see about 75 yards with no problem. It also works best with the IR light. In fact it needs to be on if you want to see further than 50 yards. I can now see the deer in the back yard at about 60 yards and people walking down the pitch black road in front of my house at about 40 yards. Very good detail as long as you use the IR light. I do not remember the older Starlight Scopes being so bright that they hurt my eyes. This scope seems too bright even when I turn down the brightness. I know it is a different technology but when I turn down the brightness it looses detail very quickly. This may not be an issue for younger people but I am nearly 60 so it may just be that my eyes are more sensitive now. Even with it's short comings I would buy this scope again for the price. I know it works well enough that I can now see what is lurking around the house in the dark. It is amazing to see all kinds of smaller animals that routinely run across the yard and get the dog barking! Other than occasionally having to adjust the gain when I first turn it on, I had no issues with it working. I read a few reviews abou...

Doesn't work!

by David, from PA, United States Written on December 10, 2016
I just ordered this product a few days ago and I have been trying to get it to work to no avail, all I get is this blurry green image. I've played around with both front and rear focus and have used the IR illuminator and it doesn't do anything, I am thinking about sending it back!

Can't Hide Now

by tcrusan, from NY, United States Written on April 3, 2015
Bought this for nightime hog hunts in Central Texas. Wanted something inexpensive to scan for hog activity within 100 yards of stand.

Returned the first one (new in box) since the monocular wouldn't turn on scope or IR exciter. Optics Planet RMA was flawless.

Was pleased with second unit and with a little effort got the brightness, contrast and focus all adjusted. Found that setting brightness a little high followed by focus then contrast last it worked out better.

Not sure about battery life yet, however who hunts at night without spare batteries for anything!
Pros:
  • Easy to hold
  • Easy to turn on/off
  • Easy to install/change batteries
Cons:
  • No sling or sling mount
  • Needs more concise instructiuons to setup
Best Used for:
  • nightime "anything" less that 100 yards

Digital night vision does as expect

by Legacy Reviewer, from WA, United States Written on July 12, 2013
Has been reliable so far and performed as or better than expected. Definitely recommend as for the price you get at least Gen 2-3 quality w/o the higher price and the risk of damage from bright light exposure. Priced in gen 1 range, but has better life expectancy and quality. This is not likely to survive shock from gun fire.
Pros: Digital provides best quality night vision for lower price.
Cons: Not mountable to guns or cameras, No magnification changes.
