Brunton International Pocket Transit Professional Compasses
Excellent piece of precision equipment. This instrument can be adapted to the personal preferences of the user. It can be read from either end using the white or black arrows of the needle. This instrument can gain accurate azimuth measurements for landmarks up to 45 degrees above or 15 degrees belo...

Brunton transit compasses are by far the most expensive on the market and so you would expect that they would be well thought out, well designed and well made. Unfortunately, they don't tick any of these boxes.
On the 5006LM model, the round level is not attached to inclinometer plate along with...

Good and excellent. Delivered in fine condition.
Brunton makes the best compass in the world. The fact that the degrees are in 1 deg increments makes it very easy to be accurate. I own several of these because I teach a field of study that requires precise accuracy. I have tried a lot of compasses but this is the best. The fact that it has two levels is very important as it provides a more accurate reading when the compass is level.

I previously had an Ainsworth pocket transit and found my Brunton to be much more reliable and sturdy. The Ainsworth needle would get stuck due to the design of the copper coil and wasn't waterproof (even by itself in an airplane cargo hold). I haven't had that problem with the hanging design of the needle. The workings and features are much more fluid than those of the Ainsworth. I was also impressed that for the price, the housing was metal and not plastic as I've seen.
Pros: Sturdy, quality craftsmanship

IMHO, a properly trained person can use a Brunton more accurately than most folks can use a GPS. I have used pocket transits for years and find taht Brunton is simply the best built and best for the money.
Pros: Accuracy beyond belief
Cons: A bit large in the hand for some folks.

As a geomorphologist, I need to travel to remote areas around the world in both hemispheres. This compass handle well anywhere. Still it will precisely help me to characterize and quantify the angles of forms, faults and stratigraphy in the field.
Pros: Handle well anywhere in the globe
Cons: Case more heavy than M2 model
