Creek's Review of Burris Signature HD Scope 3-15x44mm 1 in Tube Second Focal Plane Rifle Scope

I had serious issues sighting this thing in. As in I could not do it. Now I am no greenhorn. I grew up around rifles and did one tour in the USMC and two in the Army. And for the life of me I could not get this thing on paper - even at 25 yards. I had to send it back and Burris had to work on it. Turn around wasn't too long though and I got finally it zeroed ok. This is a burly scope but it has good features. The illumination is good and glass is also good. Knobs feel nice and aren't too stiff or too mushy. But the ocular end (the back end) of this thing is nearly is big as the objective (the front end). This directly impact how you are able - or unable - to work your rifle bolt. I had it on a Savage .308 and, although you could work the bolt, the throw angle is such that the bolt comes right up against the scope making it awkward to use and I don't have big hands either. If you have a Ruger, it may not be such a big deal because they use a 70 degree throw so the bolt won't rotate up as high. (I finally gifted it to my dad and bought a Vortex Viper HS.) Can you get around this problem? Sure. The solution is to buy higher scope rings, but that's just one more thing you have to purchase and should not be necessary. Also it can throw off your cheek weld. I could have bought the rings and saved money, obviously, but after weeks of monkeying around with it, I just got fed up. So dad is happy and I am happy. And wiser. The Vortex was a piece of cake, by the way.
