Open range/long distance perfection

Written on Feb 23, 2022

This is an awesome scope, and it should be purchased for either target shooting or open range shooting. The reason is the low end being 4 power is too much for short range deer hunting. At least for me. With some things in life, less is more and this is true for this 4-16x scope. Looking at a deer 25 - 50 yards with 4 power brings you right up close - too close. And you can visually lose the animal too. If you live out west where there is a lot of open range hunting, this would be outstanding. But for the southeast US, I'd choose a different scope - and I did. I sold this and used the money to buy a different Vortex HS that is 2.5 - 10. Perfection! Now this scope has excellent glass (made in the Philippines), quality knobs and has good focus and reticle. In short - everything that you would expect from a Vortex. I had my Bergara shooting an MOA group in 6 shots at 200 yards. It was the easiest zero I ever had the pleasure to perform. Just beautiful. So go grab one! You won't regret it. Just remember this one works best for longer, open distances and not so much woodsy areas.

Excellent product for less $

Written on Feb 23, 2022

Sturdy and inexpensive, this AK sight tool does everything it is supposed to do. Unless you leave it in the rain or fire up the old blacksmith forge and start beating on it, I think it can last a lifetime. There is literally nothing I can complain about. Put a bit of gun grease on the threads and you are good to go!

Good, but ....

Written on Feb 23, 2022

I had serious issues sighting this thing in. As in I could not do it. Now I am no greenhorn. I grew up around rifles and did one tour in the USMC and two in the Army. And for the life of me I could not get this thing on paper - even at 25 yards. I had to send it back and Burris had to work on it. Turn around wasn't too long though and I got finally it zeroed ok. This is a burly scope but it has good features. The illumination is good and glass is also good. Knobs feel nice and aren't too stiff or too mushy. But the ocular end (the back end) of this thing is nearly is big as the objective (the front end). This directly impact how you are able - or unable - to work your rifle bolt. I had it on a Savage .308 and, although you could work the bolt, the throw angle is such that the bolt comes right up against the scope making it awkward to use and I don't have big hands either. If you have a Ruger, it may not be such a big deal because they use a 70 degree throw so the bolt won't rotate up as high. (I finally gifted it to my dad and bought a Vortex Viper HS.) Can you get around this problem? Sure. The solution is to buy higher scope rings, but that's just one more thing you have to purchase and should not be necessary. Also it can throw off your cheek weld. I could have bought the rings and saved money, obviously, but after weeks of monkeying around with it, I just got fed up. So dad is happy and I am happy. And wiser. The Vortex was a piece of cake, by the way.

Good charging handle for a scoped rifle

Written on Feb 23, 2022

I put a scope on my AR and discovered what so many before have - the charging handle is now too short. Add gloves in cold weather and it is nearly impossible to use. Unless you want to pull your glove off over and over.Something had to be done. Enter the BCM Gunfighter charging handle. This little beauty was literally a game changer and made my AR great again! I chose the large latch on one side and am glad I did. It's perfect sized to get around the scope and glove issue and is not so big that it looks awkward. If you are right handed (like me) it's still easy to use...just bring the hand over and use your little finger. Construction is excellent and runs flawlessly. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.

Great for the range,

Will it get you down the road? Yes. Will it win any glamour awards? Doubtful. The glass is very OK. And it's not the easiest scope to look through, some fish eye at the higher magnifications. You have to move your head around some to see what you are pointed at. But for me, it's just fine. I am not birding or trying to see our Space Force base on the moon, though. All I need is to see the strike of the round on a paper target down range to about 200 yards. For that, it functions just right. As long as you don't expect to much from this, it won't let you down. Easy to focus and set up. It comes with a soft case and a hard case (that can lock), plus a small handy tripod and 2 lens covers. If you are buying a spotting scope for the range, it's ok. Serious long range precision clarity stuff is probably too much to expect. But for the price, I can't really complain.

Tomahawk better than ACSS?

Written on Jan 20, 2022

I am feeling good with my decision to buy the Swampfox Tomahawk in 1-6. One of the main reasons is the reticle. I picked the cross over the BDC. I have built an AR platform focused more of long(er) distance precision shooting, rather than CQB quick "Mr Blasty" work. With this in mind, my build has an 18" barrel and the cross just works better for me. I don't care for BDC reticles for many reasons, but that's a different discussion. The main competitor was from Primary Arms, but there's something about that ACSS reticle - to wit: it's too small for me. The hashmarks are so close together as to be practically useless for the reason they're there to begin with. Not so with the Swampfox. The hashmarks are nicely - but not overly - spaced, not big but not tiny. Three bears perfect! Glass is clear and the knobs are crisp and not sloppy. Not hard to turn but not easy either (did I mention those 3 bears?) There is no wiggle on any of the knobs. You have to physically turn the knobs to "bump" them out of place. But even if you did, thanks to the zero reset, you just move the knob back to 0. The red illumination is good and has performed brilliantly on both cloudy and sunny days. One thing I like about these knobs is that there is a slight flare at the top that makes it easy to grip and the texture is aggressive. Adjustments with gloves on is easy as pie. Accuracy is awesome and was easy to sight in. I believe that the stock is only going to rise with this company and that the Tomahawk

Looks soft. It isn't.

I bought this to replace the existing butt "pad" on the MOE SL hoping to get a little more cushiness while firing the AK. The ribbed construction had me thinking, "this is probably pretty comfy."
Amigos, this thing is firm! Like you can give it to your pooch for a chew toy firm. It does give a little, but only about 1/16". It's very well built like most Magpul products and was a snap to install. It will add a little bit to the length of pull (LOP), always a good thing with the AK rifle. However, if you are looking for some extra recoil protection, you might want to keep looking. There is another buttpad out there (I've seen it on one of Rob Skis AKs) that is a lot cushier, if that is what you need. If you plan to put it on an AR, you're gonna love it! This will work on the AK, but buyer beware. I recommend it as an upgrade to an AR or to add LOP, but not for recoil reduction.
