Lock it up

Written on Dec 25, 2017

This is a good unit, but is a little fussy to unlock with the finger touch method. I was able to program it once the trick of touch and rimming was mastered. The same is true of touch to unlock. It takes some experience to get it open. I always have it open unless I leave the premises, so it is only the unhurried opening when I get home that is needed.

Red Dot with Issues

Written on May 22, 2017

For the price, I'd expect a clearer (3 MOA) red dot in the glass. As others said, the dot is never just a pure round dot. Not a biggie for accuracy, just something one would expect to be better. The profile is perfect for a 1911 with the height very appropriate. The "painted on" rear (mechanical) sight simulation isn't usable for a 1911. I have seen red dot installs where one can line up such mechanical sights, have the dot sitting on the top of the mechanical view, and be spot on.... not so with the 1911 application I did. The use on the extended "first shoot" I did came off well. I had "bore sighted" the red dot and it needed little sighting. Through around 80 rounds, the sight remained tight, adjustable and accurate. I look forward to more exhaustive trials of this sight method. I shows more promise than any other type system for target shooting. Lasers are probably better for defense situations. Oh, and expect to bring a cleaning cloth as the glass takes a heavy coating from lube, powder gasses and anything else that your pistol belches.

Universal 1911 slide mount??? NOT!

Written on May 22, 2017

The adaptor billed as "fits any 1911" to adapt the Vortex red dot sight is just plain wrong. I was fairly sure it wouldn't work, but needed a starting point to machine parts to make it happen. 1) the plate did not fit to the Vortex. 2) The holes in the Vortex were too small for the machine screws used in the adaptor. 3) The adaptor did not fit to the Springfield 1911 - 9MM that I own. I made it all OK, but used a lathe and mill and hand fitting beyond most folks' capability. It might work better on some 1911's, but I can guarantee they (owners) would be perplexed and 2 of the three problems I encountered would still present a problem.

Air Rifle Optics

Written on Feb 13, 2017

This scope is as advertised. The problem is that air rifle scopes may not withstand the shock of the most powerful spring powered air rifles. I am going to have to move this scope to a lower powered rifle to evaluate it's ability to maintain zero. The problem may be the rifle, it's power, or the scope, but I haven't gotten consistent groups. I have used all the zeroing protocols of good range practices to little success. Shots vary by 1 to 1 1/2 inch at 25 yards. This may be a fine scope for the money, I just can't be sure yet.

FAB fore grip

Written on Oct 17, 2016

Works fine and the fit and finish is as expected. I don't see the functionality in the "quick release" button as one has to remove the cross bolt to move or install the grip. It is a little bit harder to install with this feature, but does no other harm or help. Good item.
