Utterly reliable, accurate, not that fast

Written on Jun 07, 2024

Over the past few years I've shot quite a bit of SIG-Sauer branded ammo and have been uniformly impressed with its reliability and generally impressed with its accuracy. I've also noticed - in several calibers - that the SIG-Sauer loadings often run impressively fast for the pressures to which they're loaded.

Now, this particular Elite Ball .380 ACP 100-grain FMJ load . . . it's definitely reliable and above-average in accuracy (over several boxes through a few different guns (Rugers, Berettas and a Glock), but it's NOT all that fast. At 5950' above sea level (so you expect quicker than down at lower elevations) this gave only an average of 831 fps (36 fps spread, deviation of 14 at about 80 degrees F) from the 3.25" polygonally "rifled" barrel of a Glock 42.

It's worth noting that this SIG ball ammo hits to the same POI (from a couple different guns) as does the (much warmer) SIG-Sauer 90-gr JHP .380 loading, with the same perceived recoil. Good training ammo, for sure.

Surprisingly nice - don't expect more than it is

Written on Mar 09, 2024

Okay, this thing is large and solid, and on the heavy side. The (cut-it-to-suit-your-needs) foam inside is good quality. The plastic is strong-ish and the latches, handles and wheels seem like they'll do for use - if you take it easy on them and don't do anything stupid. I am really pretty happy with the quality of this Savior Equipment OPMOD Ultimate Guitar Single Rifle Case. Sitting in the room with a bunch of non-gun people, no one is going to get his panties in a bunch (watch out for requests for "Kum-bah-yah," though!). Wheeled through the lobby of a hotel on a road trip, no one will bat an eye. I travel by air all the time, and this will do perfectly well (it needs locks, of course - if you're smart, you'll buy a pack of them that use the same key) in checked luggage (I'm not sure how long the external handles and wheels will hold up to the airline's luggage-throwing gorillas, but that's true of my Samsonite suitcases, as well). I like the blue color because it looks even "friendlier" than the black one, but put enough nondescript stickers on any color of these cases and no one is going to think "GUN!" when he sees it for the first time.

A LOT nicer than I'd expected

Written on Oct 24, 2022

My experience with ProMag prior to this was limited to their notso-hotso magazines. This stock was very well designed and turns out to be MUCH better than I expected; I'm really happy with it.

Install was a piece of cake. The spare rail sections up front were handy for a light. The 597 is accurate from this stock. Stock folds quickly and easily and LOP is pretty good for an average-sized man. Rubber on buttplate isn't necessary on a .22, but it's a nice touch. Your sling weaves right into the slots. The stock looks good and the rifle looks good in it - I wish it had been made this way in the first place. The ability to store stuff inside the pistol grip's trapdoor is pretty nice, too.

Downsides? As others have mentioned, the folding stock REALLY wedges closed and is a little bit of a bear to open. A little filing and waxing helps, but it looks like I still need to do more. The stock also wasn't inexpensive - but it was reasonable and it's a high-quality item as compared to similar stocks I've had in the past. Some sort of ability to store a spare magazine in the stock would have been a treat.

I'm torn - I think I'd give everything about this five stars except for the too-tight-when-folded stock and the price. Overall, it's just a heck of a nice stock - again, I wish it had been on the gun when I bought it back in the mid-Nineties.

A LOT nicer than I'd expected

Written on Aug 18, 2022

My experience with ProMag over the years until now has been only with their magazines (uniformly schlock, in my experience), so I was a little worried about this stock despite the good reviews. No reason to worry - this is a fine stock for my 597. The fit and lockup are solid and the ergonomic engineering is remarkably good - way better than I would have expected based on similar aftermarket stocks I've seen for similar .22s WAY back when. An actual rubber butt pad is unnecessary for recoil management but a nice touch for making the thing stick into your shoulder during use.

As others have commented, I did have to file a bit on the tab that locks the stock into its folded position - before the filing it would go on but was murder to pop back off (had to lever it wish a screwdriver). After 30 seconds with a file, everything's groovy. I'm just real impressed with the stock. And the price here on Optics Planet can't be beat.
