Mixed Bag

Written on Mar 13, 2025

Good Glass but horrible turrets. Glass is good, but not as good as the similar priced Athlon Ares ETR 15-60x56. The turret knob attachment to the turret stems is the Achilles heel of this scope. Three extremely tiny and too short pointed tip screws are tightened against a stem with a useless circumferential groove. The inside of the knob doesn't even have have a collar to assist in alignment of the knob on the stem. If the knob isn't perfectly centered and flush against the top of the stem, the tiny short screws will not tighten against the circumferential grooved stem, preventing attachment of the knob. If you every plan on "zeroing" a scope, buy something else. All Sightron wants to talk about is glass quality. They have glass quality, but nothing else. The unit is basically a thousand dollar paperweight.

Excellent Scope Rings

Written on Mar 05, 2025

Athlon Precision Rings simply work. They fit both Picatinny and Weaver mounts. The only downside is there is too big of a jump in height between the medium and the high rings. The high rings are MSR height and not "typical" high rings. Thus I use Vortex High rings when needed. FYI this review applies to the Precision line an not the Armorer line of rings which are Athlon's "cost conscious" rings and will not fit Weaver mounts.

Better design than simialr Kidd unit

Written on May 26, 2024

Bought to replace a Kidd unit that was a complete PIA to install and too oversized to fit an forged receiver machined to +/-.0005" of Ruger's minimum specifications.

The handle is held on the rod with a removable E clip which allows springs to be upgraded and still attach the handle to the rod. The Kidd units handle is not attached making it a PIA to install with my XL + hands.

This unit worked when the Kidd didn't in my forged receiver, Kidd bolt, Kidd trigger setup. The Kidd unit worked well in a factory receiver with extremely sloppy tolerances and build quality.

Highly recommended.

PIA to install, won't work in a high quality receiver with precise tolerances

Written on May 26, 2024

This is the first Kidd product I haven't given a 5 star rating for two reasons:

1) It's a complete PIA to install because of the loose fit handle on the rod. Might not be an issue if you've got small hands, mine are XL to 2XL (depending upon glove quality/brand),

2)Will not work with receiver built exactly to Ruger's minimum specifications (mine is a forged unit machined to Ruger's minimum to + 0.001") with a Kidd bolt because the outside diameter of wound spring (all 3) is significantly larger than ever 10/22 bolt charging handle I've seen. The factory Ruger and a TandemKross charging handles work excellent with my forged receiver, Kidd bolt, Kidd Trigger setup.

Doesn't fall out like factory pin

Written on May 23, 2024

The magazine pin on both my Ruger 10/22 triggers (standard and BX) fell out every time the barreled action was removed from the stock. The slipping pin made installation of the barreled action into the stock unnecessary difficult. Apparently I'm not the only one with this issue because I've seen a couple U-tubes advising being very careful to avoid loosing the pin. The indent ball in these pins totally resolved the issue while still remaining easy to remove when necessary.

Excellent Vise for Riflesm and Shotguns

Written on May 21, 2024

The vise is well made and easily adjustable for various sizes of long guns. I've used it for 34" barreled Trap gun, over and under, traditional double barrel, Winchester 94, several 22 semi-automatics, multiple rimfire bolt action rifles, and Remington 700 based target rifles. The vise has performed excellent in every case. Sometimes, it's required more adjusting than expected but the Ultimate Gun Vise has the range to fit everything I've thrown at it. It's also my go to rifle scope mounting area and typically located at a spot with a 50 feet view and preliminary scope sighting. I don't use pistols nor AR's but the mount comes with an AR specific attachment. The two tray with multiple slots are excellent for keeping track of little parts while working on rifles and for jags. Highly Recommended!

Good except for sightbox

Written on Mar 27, 2024

This scope is a very good value. But is not on par with the other scopes I own. The eye relief is listed as 3.7" which looks good on paper. But the acceptable range is way too narrow. It is very difficult to maintain a clear view because a 1/4" movement in you head ruins the view. Currently it's the scope I put on a rifle for someone else to shoot. I much prefer my Nikon Black, Sightron III, Athlon Cronus, and Trijicon Tenmile.

Also good for "Red" illuminated scopes

Written on Mar 08, 2024

I've used several EZ2C Targets. Every variety I've used have been excellent quality and sister company are highly recommended. The "Green" versions are excellent for scopes with "Red" illuminated reticles in addition to Red Dots. I started with a variety pack bought from Optics Planet sister company which help figure out which versions to repurchase in larger quantities.

Better than a $30 cheapo unit, but not suitable for competetion

Written on Mar 03, 2024

The name BR Competition implies the rest is suitable for benchrest competition. While it's slightly better than $30 unit's, it definitely isn't suitable for any type of competition, especially benchrest. Everything wobbles because of horrible Chinese manufacturing tolerances. The main shaft wobbles, the secondary shaft wobbles, the top wobbles and even the foot screws wobble. Tearing down and resembling made the rest slightly better but it quickly goes back to it's original condition. Showed it to the plants lead mechanical engineer who wants to repair everything instead of replace. He said to get rid of it and replace with something better. (Then he proceeded to explain everything required to correct the poor tolerances which would be more expensive than buying a premium component.) I have a Ransom International front rest being delivered next week made from a small family owned business in Arizona from 100% American made components.
Note because of greatly varying quality in Chinese made products, mine could be the worst ever made and yours better. Granted my expectations in accuracy are very high (I expect to shoot less than 1/2 moa with my CZ 457 Varmint 22lr) and this unit is the leading cause of inaccuracy.

Excellent except for the turret knobs

Written on Feb 27, 2024

If Sightron had decent turret knobs this scope would easily be a 5 star and highly recommended. Unfortunately the attachment method for the turret knobs are absolutely the worse I've seen. Even worse than those on the "free scope" that came mounted on a $169 Savage Axis Rifle I bought about 5 years ago. The knobs are attached with 3 TINY pointed tip allen screw that require a 1.27mm allen wrench. A magnification glass is needed just to the see the screws and the hole in the knob is so deep a magnetic bit holder won't work. The screws tighten against a hollowed out area of the turret stem and are just too SHORT. If you accidentally tighten one of the tiny extremely short screws too much then it'll fall into the hollowed out area and are too TINY to be located.

When I say TINY, I mean magnification glass is required to see them!

I highly recommended avoiding Sightron Scopes until they fix the turret knob issues which is a total shame because everything else is perfect.
