Impressive scope for the price

Written on Sep 01, 2025

Only recently I've been using long guns on my ranch to shoot wild hogs. Zeroing scopes and optics to 100 yards or more without a spotting scope can be a tedious task; shoot 1-3 rounds, walk to the target to see the results, walk back, adjust, repeat until getting zero. I finally broke down and found this Vortex Crossfire HD 20-60x80 scope at Optics Planet. You can spend many hundreds of dollars more for these scopes but for my needs this model gets it done. Nothing about this scope looks cheap or bargain basement; it comes in a very high quality box, the build quality is excellent, and the clarity and magnification are superb. It comes with a neoprene cover to provide added protection from getting banged up but it doesn't hinder focusing or adjustments. The provided mount worked fine with a photography tripod I had on hand. I'm very satisfied with this scope and am confident it will make my future distance target practice scoring and zeroing much easier.

Great value

Written on Aug 20, 2025

After mounting a Holosun green dot on my Kel-Tec SUB2K I decided that due to the design of the rifle that the optic sat too low on the rail to make for comfortable sighting. Shopping around for a small riser this Lion Gears .75" 6-slot was just the ticket. The price variability for these things is pretty wide and hard to explain; you can spend many, many dollars more for a riser that does the same thing as this product. It took 30 seconds to mount, the build quality is top-notch, the Holosun easily attached to it and is rock solid. I ran 100 rounds through the SUB2K and it was tight afterwards.

Yes, it's pricey but there's a reason for that

Years ago when I got back from a deployment I decided to pick up an AR-15 style rifle mostly to maintain proficiency and familiarity. I bought an old school design with the carrying handle that reminded of the rifles we used when I was in the Army back in the 70's. The problem was finding a decent optic to mount on it and I tried a few things that never did the job.

Now that I'm much older I find even with Rx glasses on hitting anything reliably with iron sights just isn't happening. I'm familiar with the Trijicon brand from my service experience and decided to take the plunge and buy this scope. It is definitely worth the money to me. It is designed to fit right on top of the carrying handle of my AR, the fit was pretty snug but that's a good thing as you know it's going to hold zero.

Speaking of zeroing, I had to make one adjustment for windage but I did have to crank down the elevation considerably which isn't surprising given the high mounting position. Not having to mess with batteries is a bonus, the fiber optic illumination of the 'donut' is excellent and in the dark the tritium illum works great as well. Considering the track record this scope has for durability with the armed forces it should hold up to anything I'm going to throw at it.

This scope (which cost more than what I paid for the rifle) has taken a gun that I never took out of the safe and made it into a 'go-to' option now the next time I need a long gun.

Compact and much brighter than older lights in the TLR series

Written on Oct 08, 2022

I live out in the country where at night it is really, really dark. If I have to go out to investigate unusual noises or why the dogs are having a meltdown at zero dark thirty having a weapons light is a definite plus. I've had an older TLR-1 mounted on a Glock 41 Gen 4 and even on that large pistol it always felt kind of bulky. I saw these TLR-7A's and decided to give one a try, what a difference. This light is almost half the size of the TLR-1 and is twice as bright and weighs less. I liked it so well I bought a second one to mount on a Ruger PC Carbine that only has a very small rail on the fore end stock and it's winner as well. For the money these lights are worth the investment.

Must have for the Holosun Green Dot sight

Written on Oct 08, 2022

After purchasing a Holosun Green Dot sight for my Ruger PC Carbine I decided that at 65 years old a little magnification might be a welcome accessory so bought this 3X Holosun and it's a game changer. Even wearing Rx glasses the clarity I had when I was much younger just isn't there but this magnifier really sharpens up the target making it easier to line up the green dot. For closer in shooting it easily flips down and out of the way. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Excellent sight for the money

Written on Feb 21, 2022

As I've gotten older I've found even with corrective lenses seeing the front sight post (especially) on a long gun is pretty tough unless it's a fiber optic type. I recently acquired a Ruger PC Carbine and that small, black front sight post was very hard to see. I added this Holosun Green Dot Sight and what a difference! The green reticle shows up clearly regardless of light conditions and the sight was very accurate out of the box and only needed a slight adjustment for windage. No more struggling to get a clear sight picture and the Holosun 3X magnifier is the perfect accessory for this sight. This HE510C looks to be made from quality materials and could not be easier to mount on any Picatinny rail, it's a great value.

Great EDC pocket LED light

Written on Jun 28, 2021

The Streamlight Wedge is a very nice LED light that should be a popular addition to anyone's EDC. 300 lumens isn't going to blow out someone's retinas in a tactical situation but this slim, rechargeable light will come in handy and is plenty bright for most situations after dark. The aluminum body is very high quality and has a matte anodized finish and the side mounted switch is easy to use and convenient. It's compact size and lightweight along with a sturdy pocket clip make the Wedge a great choice for anyone who wants a better option after dark than their cellphone "flashlight" app.

Sturdy storage at a bargain price

Written on Jul 05, 2018

I finally got fed up with all the junk rolling around in the back of my crossover SUV and was looking for something to store it all in. Found this on Optics Planet and had to double check the price. It's the perfect size and looks sturdy enough for the task and even has wheels. Definitely a bargain for the price and well worth the money.
