Titan 1.25" Swivel TTN-79301

Written on Jan 25, 2024

I wanted something better than the ugly and ubiquitous Uncle Mike's style "QD" sling swivels with their unsightly, asymmetrical lock knobs and cheap wire loops. These swivels are more refined and retro-style plus they mount closer to the stock and do not hang low like the Uncle Mike's style. Product description says they are "all metallic construction" and while the main body is not attracted to a magnet, they are not aluminum either; they are a heavy cast/forged metal, maybe stainless. These are uniquely constructed; the base pin is retained by a spring-loaded detent ball mounted in one of the legs and they snap open and closed. They seem very secure but the small end of the base pin has an annular groove that could hold a small "E" clip if you wanted extra security when you're jumping from airplanes... but the instructions don't mention this. I would prefer it if the brass base pin was black steel instead but it can be blackened with brass black or allowed to tarnish or darken naturally.

Winchester White Box

Written on Jan 12, 2024

The famed Winchester White Box: This is basic, reliable, brass cased boxer primed range ammo and U.S. manufactured. The only thing I can possibly say negative about it is that it might be dirtier compared to Federal 9x19. Many say Winchester ammo in general leaves behind a lot of firing residue and whether Winchester propellant is dirtier than the norm or not I cannot say but all smokeless powder cartridges are “dirty” to some extent so please clean accordingly. I state this obvious common sense because I think we have a growing trend of leaving firearms dirty. I think it has something or a lot to do with torture testing and I have seen more than one self-described "expert" say all you need is a wipe-down of the exterior and some say they never clean the barrel or action except once every 5,000 rounds. Be advised that the packaging is unusual—the box is long, narrow and about 2” x 2” x 6”. The cartridges are lying on their sides in neat rows of 25 rounds per layer, separated by thin cardboard. The top of the box is glued shut like a cereal box (tamper resistant) and opens the same way with a slot and tab arrangement for closure. Someone wrote a negative 2-star review just because of the box and said the cartridges are loose inside with no dividers but that is untrue. The box allows you to dump the rounds out quickly so you can load your magazines and there is no plastic rack to get in the way so the packaging is environmentally sound and biodegradable if you are into that. Fits Maverick 88 20" barrel*

Written on Dec 30, 2023

A very decent combination bayonet mount/front sling swivel/tactical light-laser mount. I read the reviews and knew about a few fitment issues beforehand. I installed the largest piece first (on a Maverick 88 with 20" barrel) but it needed a shim to make it fit tight. I used one layer of 3M 3340 (thin aluminum tape) on the inside diameter of the piece and it fit snugly; might be room for two layers of tape. The end cap that supports the bayonet ring was too tight and would not install by hand. It needed to be hollowed out slightly to fit over the take-down screw so I used a 1/2" Dremel sanding drum to slowly remove material from the inside diameter until it fit loosely but snugly, then used the mounting screw to lock it down. The mount is highly modular; you can remove the Picatinny rails, use just one or both. You can unscrew the sling stud and remove it if you do not need it. The mount allows you to use a regular length sling since some slings might be at their adjustment limit if you use the factory sling mount on the end of the mag tube. You can use only the sling stud/Picatinny rail part and leave off the end piece for the bayonet ring if you desire. Item is aluminum with a matte black coating, it is not made of steel but it is fairly hefty. It is possible the steel screws will react with the aluminum (galvanic corrosion) and get stuck so If you want to take it off in 5 years, maybe use some anti-seize on the screws. Blue Loctite can be used to keep the screws
