Longbowelk's Review of Caldwell Lead Sled Solo Recoil Reducing Shooting Rest 101777
I have been using a homemade vise to use to sight in my rifles. This old system used 2 sand bags(handmade using blue jean leg material) set on top of the homemade wooden vise or box. This sit on top of a special cut plywood board that was 5/8" thick. This board is clamped to one of the old portable work benches. This product was easy to put together. I find the product to be well built. It did help on the shoulder when I put a sandbag on the tray. Adjusting the crosshairs utilizing the adjustment wheels was excellent. Only problem I ran into was once I had it lined up it would move as soon as I shouldered the gun. So I ended up trying to zero or reset it as it has now moved. I found this to be a little irritating. I think the problem is the front "V" is not that secure as the rounded part of the forearm of the rifle doesn't lay into the "V" just right. I tried tightening it but it didn't make it much better. The other problem I had was this new system sits higher than the other system due to the height of the 3 pegs. I didn't have another stool that I could adjust so I had to do the spread leg system to get down where I needed to be. This was tiring and uncomfortable. Finally, and this is my fault, the workhorse was not that steady with me in the odd ball position I was in. I can solve this problem by building a permanent shooting table. I was shooting a Savage Model 11 7mm 08. The gun fit good in the system. I like the system and do recommend it but you have to be able to sit using a solid table to get the best of this system.
Pros:
- Well Built and Solid
- Definitely takes the kick out and saves the shoulder
Cons:
- front "V" needs to be able to tighten more
Best Used for:
- sighting in
