Most Helpful Positive Review Off trail packing/Tactical
If you use topos or generally want a real compass this it. Well built and in the USA. One day a will get a GPS mostly for carrying the mapping info. But I'm strictly a map and compass person for now. I have to shoot some relatively complex routes through the N Georgia Wilderness area's always off trail. Pros: copper induction no liquid crap Cons: Pouch oversized in height, guess you could use space for something elese

Great quality, awesome color

by David Schreiner, Verified Owner from AZ, United States Written on November 12, 2024
Now that my daughter is old enough to start learning how to navigate in the woods I wanted to get her a quality compass for Scouts (GSA and Scouting America). When I saw the special edition of one of my most trusted and valuable pieces of gear I knew it was the right choice. Also, as a retired soldier and someone who insisted on training all my soldiers on how to navigate with map and compass incase GPS failed, I would have loved to see a troop break out a pink lensatic compass.
Pros:
  • Durability
  • reliability
Cons:
  • None
Best Used for:
  • Navigation

I haven’t gotten lost yet.

by Squidward, Verified Owner from TN, United States Written on December 20, 2023
I probably should have sprung for the tritium version. But it seems to point towards magnetic north most of the time. Or at least towards the giant magnetic field of the high voltage power lines by my house. The case it comes in is useful but I don’t trust the snap. So tie the lanyard to whatever load bearing gear you decide to use before snapping the case to your belt or whatever.

Phosphorecent Model Only...

by DOak, from CA, United States Written on December 14, 2023
It's a Cammenga. Built like a tank and functional. Will I use it for anything more than getting a bearing on hikes or camping...I sure hope not or things have gone terribly wrong. May inspire me to bring mor maps rather than just relying on trail markers.
Pros:
  • build quaity
  • Buy once, Cry once.
Cons:
  • price
Best Used for:
  • Hikers and camping

Excellent piece of gear

by Jon, from TX, United States Written on February 23, 2022
The Cammenga (American made) lensatic compass is accurate, durable and reliable. This particular type of compass makes use of inductive damping instead of being liquid damped (meaning it's impossible to develop a bubble in this type of compass). For that reason, it's my go to compass when hiking at higher elevations and during cold weather. Because it serves it's purpose so well, I also sometimes (but not always) use it during warmer weather and at lower elevations. It's a great piece of equipment and well worth the price. The Chinese made knock offs are not only prone to developing bubbles (they're all liquid damped), they're frequently inaccurate. Given that one of the best ways to avoid a survival situation is to make sure you don't get lost, I consider my compass to be one of my most important pieces of gear.
Pros:
  • Spot on accurate, durable and very reliable.
Cons:
  • Slightly (but only slightly) heavier than a standard baseplate or mirror sighting compass.
Best Used for:
  • Hiking (trail or back country) & hunting
Would recommend: Yes

The perfect backup

by Stro, from NY, United States Written on August 19, 2020
When your batteries and your GPS fails .. this is your FOREVER backup. Rugged and well designed. (my only wish for improvement, would be liquid filled housing to minimize shock damage and reduce needle bounce/wobble - ...though.. that would Negatively add weight). Learn how to use this... and you will never worry again.
Pros:
  • Rugged & reliable
  • Timeless
Cons:
  • a little bulky
Best Used for:
  • Hiking, hunting or travel.

Great Compass

by jbags64, from TX, United States Written on June 3, 2016
I have been looking for a good military style compass like I used when I was in the Army Reserves. This one feels like it is quality made, looks great and performs great. I will put it to good use as I start exploring with it. I can use it for my work and my exploring adventures.

Works Well

by Legacy Reviewer, Verified Owner from MT, United States Written on June 30, 2012
For those who like to actually be involved in hiking and where they are going, this is a must. If you wish to rely on some electronic gadget to tell you where you need to go, you can wait until your batteries fail. Your choice.
Pros: Simple, solid, good tool
Cons: None

It's a great compass

by Legacy Reviewer, Written on February 18, 2012
Its a great compass, takes some training to use it fully. Having to learn how to use mils and how to properly hold it. Its tough as nails and easy to maintain. Only beef is it could have a declination adjustment so i don't have to figure in that change into everything i do. but the military doesn't want that so other then that i love it.
Pros: easy to use, not affected by altitude or temp
Cons: wish it had a declination adjustment
Would recommend: Yes
