Most Helpful Positive Review CT Green for S & W J-frame w/ShockStop
Typical 1st rate product. Before I purchased, Optics Planet assured me that this was the latest model, despite an older picture. Grip is slightly longer than before, helps to recoil control. Extra absorbent material (ShockStop) high in the backstrap also helps. And free batteries yearly for life....

Works great for a J-Frame Air Wieght S&W Hammerless Revolver

by Gary B., Verified Owner from MD, United States Written on April 29, 2025
One of the biggest issues with a stub nose hammerless 38 is that you basically need to be on top of the target before you can hit the broad side of a barn. Enter the only time I've ever found a Crimson Trace laser to be 100% valuable. The laser grip is an excellent replacement for an OEM SW 38 Air Weight 642 revolver. The GREEN laser is very bright and gives you the ability to aim in the center of mass. (Which with a 38 stub nose is the only place you have any chance of hitting.) This sight changes the ability to use the revolver from a "I might be able to hit a very close target) to a "I can hit a target out to 3 yards reliably." Huge difference that technology can actually help you solve. This doesn't change the revolver type for being used only in a critical emergency, that's still the case. However, it increases the safety margin for use significantly.
Pros:
  • Ease of use
  • Target Aquisition
Cons:
  • Changing batteries
Best Used for:
  • All purposes

Battery scare

by Ben, Verified Owner from AL, United States Written on February 22, 2025
After I put these on my j frame I noticed some intermittent failure to illuminate events. I admit I was nervous because I KNOW crimson trace reputation is stellar. After reading the instructions closer I realized I didn't install the copper plate correctly so it was all my fault. There is a pair of tabs on the bottom that have housing groves they go in before the screw goes in. Now I know I can count on this thing to function every single time. Only reason I gave 4 stars is for how hard my heart was beating before I knew it was my bad. For sure recommend to anyone. Even fits in my leather holster no problem.
Pros:
  • Everything
Cons:
  • None

by Mickey, Verified Owner from TX, United States Written on August 7, 2024
This is my third J-frame green laser from Crimson Trace and very satisfied.
The first to be ordered from OPTICS and went on time (actually one day early) and correct product. 100% pleased with them.
I don’t take time to do much practiced so feel laser makes up for it.

Once you get it working its great ,,,,but you may have to "rig " it

by chris, Verified Owner from TN, United States Written on May 16, 2024
I have the Crimson Trace Laser grip on 4 revolvers -- 2 of them worked great right out of the box but 2 of them I had to cut a piece of cardboard and insert it against the battery cover plate to keep enough pressure on the plate for it to make good contact with the batteries -- without the cardboard it randomly works or doesnt work -- you can pick it up and it works great and you can lay it on the table and pick it back up and it doesnt work or vice versa. Very frustrating -- if you will cut 1-2 thin pieces of cardboard about the size of a quarter and wedge that in the middle of the grip when you close it up it will work fine -- kind of a shame to pay what you pay for this and you have to rig it to work but based on my experience its a 50-50 chance you will have to do this -- once you get it working it is awesome -- just be aware that you may get one that needs modification ---

Great product, but be careful when inserting batteries

by Mr. K, Verified Owner from CA, United States Written on April 14, 2024
I bought this CT green laser grips for a J Frame S&W revolver. I returned iit do to a problem with the switch where it would often not illuminate. I returned and replaced it and learned from a call to CT customer support that the battery cover has two tabs that must be placed in slots under the rim of the battery case. The instructions manual did not specify this requirement. Now, they are working perfectly. Also, the unit was manufactured over a year ago, so the batteries were at least that old. CT sent me fresh batteries. Having a laser does not substitute for training, but in a panic situation, and the additional aiming enhancement is most welcome. If the unit had better instructions and came with fresh batteries, I would give it 5 stars.
Pros:
  • comfortable grip
  • Green laser is easy to see
Cons:
  • None

Crimson Trace on S&W 638 .38+P

by Shade Tree Gunsmith, Verified Owner from CA, United States Written on April 7, 2024
This laser grip from Crimson Trace is a direct replacement for the factory grips on the Smith & Wesson 638 (and other J frames per their description). An easy swap with jus one screw. The CT grip is a bit longer than the factory grips which is nice if you have larger hands. The green laser is very bright and works well in the daylight at distances you would expect to shoot a snub nose .38. It runs on four lithium disk batteries that only cost about $1 a piece so replacing them won’t be too expensive. The laser is activated by pressing a button on the front of the grip with your middle finger. Very intuitive, almost automatic. It also has an on/off switch in the butt of the grip. The laser is situated in the right side of the grip. I was worried about obstructing it when shooting right handed. It is high enough in the grip that this has not been an issue for me. Easy to adjust the laser with the included Allen wrench.
Pros:
  • EASY INSTALL
  • Very bright laser
Cons:
  • None
Best Used for:
  • Close range self defense pistol
