EGW Oversize Firing Pin Stop Series 70.

by New to 1911., from TX, United States Written on July 19, 2023
I'm a new owner of a 1911, specifically a Springfield Armory RO Champion. Bought this square bottom firing pin stop after reading that it can help with recoil management and to fix the slight extractor clocking from the loose factory stop. This oversize firing pin stop from EGW did obviously require filing to fit my 1911, but that was straightforward enough that even someone new to 1911's, like myself, could do it. Once fitted, the part fit tightly into the frame and there was no issue with the alignment of the firing pin hole. My extractor is now held firmly in place with no clocking or fore and aft movement.
Pros:
  • Oversized to allow custom fitting to your frame.
  • Square bottom design
Cons:
  • None
Best Used for:
  • Replacing unsatisfactory factory part
  • Fixing issues caused by loose extractor
  • Changing felt recoil and lockup timing

Must have original JMB design

by LensWork, Verified Owner from FL, United States Written on January 8, 2021
The original John Moses Browning design for the firing pin stop had just a very slight bevel on the bottom edge and this EGW part replicates the original blueprint design. Some refer to this EGW FPS as a “flat bottom” type, but there is a very slight radius on the bottom edge. The purpose of the original “square” or “flat bottom” FPS was to hold the slide locked and slow the slide velocity ever so slightly which reduces muzzle flip. Later firing pin stop designs have a much more beveled radius on the bottom edge. This was done to make the slide easier to rack without cocking the hammer first. You can definitely feel the difference that this FPS makes versus current more beveled versions. This part is oversized in width and thickness and will require fitting. The oversized design insures a tight fit that will prevent the extractor from “clocking” or twisting which will lead to more consistent extraction.
Pros:
  • Oversized
  • Reduces muzzle flip
  • Slows slide velocity
  • eliminates extractor twisting
Cons:
  • Gunsmith installation recommended.
  • Requires fitting
Best Used for:
  • Any 1911 with large radius FPS
