My wife could not care less about this kind of stuff. However, when I put it in her hand she said "Oh!". Translation: "That's way cooler than I expected." It has multiple configurations. Everything you can do right-hand, you can do left-handed. I'm a lefty. Good luck!

Gerber Strongarm Knife Review

by raf, Verified Owner from RI, United States Written on August 9, 2023
Scabbard: Common plastic scabbard with 1/8" dia holes on sides and 1" wide slots for lashing cords/straps. Unsure if the scabbard is reinforced by glass fibers, which would strengthen the scabbard, possibly at the cost of making it more "fragile". The scabbard has the built-in ability to be carried horizontally on user's belt (Scout style) and this feature can be deleted and the scabbard, along with included nylon webbing (frog), can be vertically belt mounted on a PALS platform, although additional cords/webbing straps may be needed.

No leg lanyard, nor additional cords/straps for the scabbard included. Scabbard will allow knife to "snap-in" to it, but I've seen tighter, more secure iterations of this feature. The included nylon webbing items (Frog) have a top-mounted, snapped, wrap-around strap for the top of the knife's handle. Nylon webbing frog has a wide (3-1/2") belt loop at the top of the nylon scabbard attachment.

Handle: Usual overmolded semi-soft plastic with grippy texture. Ends of the handle seem to be made of harder black plastic. Gerber claims the "substrate" of the handle (presumably the exposed ends of the handle) is glass-filled, which adds strength; likely the overmolded plastic handle lacks such, which is of little account, except that such "overmolded" plastics may suffer after contact with oils. From my experience with devices having "overmolded" plastic handles, Strongly suggest keeping all oils away from the "overmolded" plastics.

Great knife! 100% satisfied

by Jediknight, Verified Owner from MN, United States Written on September 19, 2022
100% recommend this knife. If you're looking for a do it all, jack of all trades, will take a beating and keep on ticking knife, SHTF, bug-out bag knife, that could save your life, this one is the ONE. I'm very happy with this purchase and highly recommend. I really like the grip and rubberized texture on the handle. Super beefy blade that I am very confident in and sharp enough for me.

Balances really well and is a great throwing knife too. Black coating will rub off over time/use/abuse and should be expected. Sheath is really great, giving you a very nice "click" sound when engaged. I haven't really tried but I don't see this falling out under normal use.

I'm sure there are other better knives for other difference purposes, like bushcrafting and what-not. There will be better knives out there for that specific purpose (like the Mora Garberg which I almost got would likely be better at bushcrafting vs the Strongarm), however I wanted a very strong fixed blade that can DO IT ALL/survival type of knife, it won't necessarily do everything better than others, but it will be capable of doing EVERYTHING. Trade-offs right. This knife can do bushcraft (maybe not the best) but it can do it. The can also serve as a great self-defense fighting knife. Has good grip, will work well for stabbing (if needed) has a good enough guard, is tough steel, has all the great mounting options, and for the price am very happy with my purchase.

As a side note, this was my 1st order with Optics Plan...

Solid as a rock.

by Mike Inmichigan, Verified Owner from MI, United States Written on May 2, 2022
Nice tool. I took it to the woodpile as soon as I got it. It must split wood. I stood up a 3.5" branch/baseball bat and hammered it with another 3.5" branch. Flawlessly split in 2 strikes. The solid build is evident. My granddaughter held it and said: " Nice grip, feels good." 20 years old and she recognized quality. Wife? "Feels solid" as she banged it on a log. 65 years old. Me? Like a tank, USA quality, thank god. 66 years of wisdom. I know there are other good knifes out there but this is my first full shank knive, and I really feel my research paid off.
Pros:
  • Multiple attachment abilities, solid as a rock.
Cons:
  • make it tighter on my ccw belt
  • A bit loose on my ccw belt
Best Used for:
  • It is truly a tool with tons of uses.

One of the best fixed blades in its class

by Oakes, Verified Owner from TX, United States Written on May 8, 2021
I’m sort of a knife collector, having started 30 plus years ago with cheap Buck knives and eventually spending way too much on what I consider to be a “tool”. I have several other fixed blades, but avoided Gerber for a long time. I finally decided to give this a try, after seeing several torture test videos on YouTube. When it arrived, I immediately noticed the quality in the build and a good edge...even from the factory. I attached it to my Molle kit and have used it several times from minor slices to pounding it through mesquite in preparation for smoking on the grill. This thing takes a beating, sharpens back up quickly and nicely and holds its own. In this class of knives, it holds its own weight and I would buy it again.

Great all around knife

by lee, Verified Owner from OH, United States Written on April 20, 2021
Great knife for doing just about anything in the field without costing a crazy amount. No problems with keeping an edge and fits perfectly on a belt or any type of rig setup as its not an incredibly large knife.

love this knife

by Mwarrior, Verified Owner from WA, United States Written on April 2, 2021
Great knife, sharp out of the box, but that doesn’t mean you can’t give it a once over to really tune it up. Holds an edge well, sheath and mounting accessories are simple to install, just a great knife all around!

Great American made Knife

by Wm Palmer, from SC, United States Written on June 25, 2019
I have two of these knives...one black one coyote that area attached to my Cannae bug out Legion packs in the same colors. Great size knife...not to big or too small. Stout enough to take some hard use and come back for more. Decent steel, easy to sharpen, holds a decent edge and will not let you down. Buck has used it for generations...it works, period regardless of what the "steel snobs" think...the sheath is very nice and provides many different options for attachment to belt, packs etc. Holds the knife well, no rattle etc...easy in and out, secure straps etc. You can not get a better USA made blade for the price, and on sale or with a coupon...even better!!
Pros:
  • USA made, decent steeel, quality build
Cons:
  • None

Great "Do it all" Knife

by Derek, from IN, United States Written on January 14, 2019
I bought this as a "soldier" blade to mount on my plate carrier via molle webbing. This knife can do everything and it's extremely robust and made in the USA. I love the sheath and all the mounting options. The coyote color goes well with my multicam setup. I could not find a better price for this anywhere else. Thanks Optics Planet!!
Pros:
  • Durable (good luck breaking it)
  • sheath works very well
Cons:
  • None for me
