Most Helpful Positive Review Great sonic cleaner for hobbyist
Good machine, a little fragile, plastic construction. Great features like heat, valve and hose for draining, digital controls, basket, extra tank. Controls are not intuitive. Not sure if a pro unit would clean better, possibly. Drain hose will leak a bit when draining. A hose clamp would fix th...

Most Helpful Negative Review Big, powerful, but not big enough sometimes
My first thought opening the box was that this thing was huge. I've used a Hornady Magnum ultrasonic clearer for years but wanted something I could clear AR platform uppers in. Filled it up, turned it on, and was amazed at what the four transducers put out. It got hot quickly and the ultrasonic act...

Is "Good Enough" good enough?

by StampCollector, Verified Owner from TX, United States Written on September 29, 2024
If you're the sort of hobbyist who is not super-meticulous about cleaning, this unit might do the trick. But if you really like to clean down to the metal and get into nooks and crannies, I'd advise against it. After a 25-minute cycle with heat and degassing, I find that the surface fouling is only partially removed - and difficult to reach spaces are the least clean of all. So I end up having to pull out my CLP, cleaning rods, brushes, patches, rags, and everything else to, well, clean the firearm. For me, rather than saving time, the Hornady Hot Tub makes the process of cleaning two to three times longer (factoring in the setup, use, and cleaning of the machine.) If you just want to basically do a single-pass wipe down of your gear, however, you may find it useful.

Cleans well

by J, Verified Owner from WA, United States Written on July 9, 2017
Bought this to clean AR and parts. Works well with the Hornady additive. Had to use on Highest temperature for about an hour to really remove carbon. It will not take off baked in carbon muzzle brakes and bolts, but does a decent job on everything else. I do recommend that you don't let parts dry off until you rinse with fresh water as there was some type of staining left on the anodizing of my lower. All around good product for size and cost.

Works well but doesn't remove baked on

by Dave, from GA, United States Written on May 20, 2017
This ultrasonic removes oil, lube, and light carbon wonderfully but does not work well for removing backed on carbon in silencer baffles. The cleaner works much better when using the main bin rather than the small parts bin. The instruction manual does not give clear information on how to properly use the cleaner, but with a little trial and error it can all easily be figured out

Hot Tub Works Perfect!

by Blanco, from CT, United States Written on September 30, 2016
The hot tub works just like it says it does. Every batch of shells that I run through it get factory clean. The key is to make sure you have the mix ratio correct between the cleaner that you use and water. Once you have that correct it works perfectly. You should not hesitate spending the money to get this machine. You won't be disappointed.
Pros:
  • name brand
  • Works and looks professional
Cons:
  • None
Best Used for:
  • cleaning casings

Finaly a ultrasonic cleaner that is big enough

by Al, Verified Owner from OH, United States Written on June 20, 2016
If you haven't tried an ultrasonic cleaner you're missing the boat. I have a smaller Hornady unit that is great on small parts but you can't fit whole guns in it. This one you can and it doesn't cost a million dollars. It's super important that the cleaner heat the fluid. Why? Not so much for the cleaning aspect, although I'm sure that helps a lot, It's so it drys. You really don't want water on or in your gun. The parts are usually too hot to touch when they come out so they dry off really well and pretty fast. If you have compressed air, so much the better. Get as much water off as you can and then spray it down with a WD40 like product and you're good to go.

I was able to clean a totally gunked in cosmoline Yugo M48 Mauser. It was so bad that when you pulled the trigger, the striker oozed forward. It was almost unclean-able with a tooth brush and solvent. The ultrasonic tank with the appropriate detergent worked a miracle.

Better than expected

by AZM79, from AZ, United States Written on April 16, 2016
I read all the reviews before using and I have to say I was expecting a lot from this machine after using it to clean my dirty suppressors I was amazed. This cleans better than I was hoping for a much faster than the reviews lead you to believe I have not cleaned any guns at this point but for suppressors it heats up quickly and cleaned very quickly I was very impressed. One trick I did was added the hot water to the tank from the tap I think it helps speed up the heating element.

Hornady 9L Hot Tub

by Chili, from GA, United States Written on April 9, 2016
The Hornady 9L Hot Tub Ultrasonic cleaner is awesome! It is very easy to use and does a fantastic job. It makes cleaning a pistol and a bolt carrier group much easier. It is big enough to put an entire upper with 16" barrel. I highly recommend it. No one enjoys cleaning rifles but this makes it much easier.

Works like it's supposed to!

by lifeman98, from CT, United States Written on October 23, 2015
The product does what it says! Well worth the money! It can do a complete upper receiver which is what really attracted me to this product. It saves all sorts of time by not having to strip down the upper receiver and deep clean each part.
Pros:
  • Works perfectly
Cons:
  • Rather large

Good Consumer Grade Product

by EagleBrewer, from TX, United States Written on April 14, 2015
I bought this after my gunsmith showed me his $2k professional sonic cleaner.

This is a great product that bridges the gap between the small consumer grade sonic cleaners and the high dollar professional ones.

Here are my observations:
1. Good features like heater, degassing function, drain, etc.
2. Lots of flimsy looking plastic - may or may not hold up long term.
3. Barely fits a 16" AR-15 upper. No luck with a longer barrel. Even a 16" upper with a large muzzle device will be close.

Even with the negatives, I am very happy with this product and would highly recommend it. I think Hornady found a good balance between cost and quality.
Pros:
  • Price (compared with pro cleaners)
  • Pro grade features
Cons:
  • AR upper longer than 16" will not fit
  • Cheap looking plastic material

Exactly what I've been needing for far too long

by Denvershooter, from CO, United States Written on October 14, 2014
I've wanted a large capacity sonic cleaner for rifles in particular for 20 years now. I've always hemmed and hawed at the $1000 price tag of the big stainless tanks, but figured one day I'd justify spending the tax refund on one. Well here comes Hornady to the rescue again.

I've only used this twice thus far but the SBR AR upper/BCG and 2 pistol uppers I've run through have come out nice and clean.

Pros: Very affordable entry into a Sonic Cleaner, Easy to understand features and fairly clear instructions. Easy to separate parts with the extra bins

Cons: Like most, it's loud, Cleaning medium is stupid expensive and this baby needs lots o'cleaning juice. Fit and finish isn't the best, I'm expecting failure with the plastic parts (of which the majority of the exterior components are made)

Final impressions: Time will tell and seeing as I'm a slacker about cleaning rifles (clean my semi auto's about every 2K rounds) and pistols, this should remove my excuse to clean more often. Just make sure you rinse the cleaning fluid off the parts really well (I use a large basin and pressure sprayer with hot water), lube the heck out of them again before use. Taking the time to fully disassemble parts that can be (field strip the pistol upper and AR BCG) will net the best results. Be warned.. if you've painted with Avero or Krylon, expect to have to re-touch/re-paint.

It's a worthy buy, but I expect that at some point I'll move up to a larger heated system just so I can clean multiple r...
