I found one of these in my shed after I moved into my new place. It took less than two minutes with two mini flat head screw drivers to open it. After I got it open I noticed it was bent at the hinge but I was able to hammer it back into shape. So it's also lacks in strength of material. When I first found it and looked up the price I wondered who would spend so much to leave it when leaving. It's easy enough to get replacement keys for it from the manufacturer so that couldn't be it. I did think about using it myself until after only spending minutes to open it and seeing the actual quality of the product. Then I fully understood why it was left behind. To add insult to the already injured product, when I went to fix the bend in the hinge so it would open and close properly. The top plate for the touch pad fell off like it never had any adhesive of any sort to keep it in place. You'd be better off with a harbor freight safe at a fraction of the price. It's not even a good looking design for the money. Very basic and bulky. The way it opens also makes it so you have to mount it with room for it to pop out the side and in my car there not enough room on the driver's side and that leaves the passenger getting smacked in the legs of I need to get it opened quickly in an emergency.

I bought this for my husband for Christmas, and when he went to install it, the installation kit was a plastic board covered with an inflatable nylon bladder. It made the safe unusable.

I was confident that the "free return" policy meant free returns, but it did not and I had to pay to return an inferior, overpriced product.

The vehicle safe secures in place using the air bladder better than expected. It doesn't move around at all. It is also easy to program and gain access using the supplied RFID accessories. Various sizes of guns fit secure in the safe from micro compact to full size.

I bought this safe a few weeks ago. In my F-150 the air bladder used to mount it did not work at all. The weight of the safe would not allow the bladder to stay in place. Also, the safe would not fit in the area between the console and the dash with the bladder. I ended up building my own mount for the safe out of angle iron and bolting it to the bottom of the middle console. The other issue is the size of the safe. It will NOT accept a full size semi-auto. I have an HK USP compact .45 which just fits. My full size .40 would not fit. Also, even the compact .45 will not fit with the 12 round magazine--only the 10 round fits. That said, the safe itself seems pretty strong and it has three ways to open it--an rfid, a numeric code stored in the system and a mechanical key.

The safe arrived promptly, packaged very well. The safe has easy to follow installation instructions and secured in my car in a easy to reach place so if I would need to access my side arm quickly in my car I can do so without much distraction from driving.

Update by author: The beeps can be silenced using the directions given, but only when the safe is unlocked with the door open. Hornady CS was unaware of this omission, and will modify the directions in the manual shortly.

By the way, when using the numeric combination entry method, finger placement is important, and somewhat difficult in strong sunlight when there is minimal contrast with the highlighted finger placement zones. Other than that, the finger combination firmware and mechanism are 100% reliable when using that method, which I regard as only for backup use, if the key and RFID devices are unavailable.

The RFID entry is the fastest entry method, and the only one I would recommend using under duress. Also, there is no combination that can be observed, e.g. by a passenger.

I gave this a five star review because unlike a previous (non-Hornady) product, the code entry method is 100 percent reliable, as is the RFID entry procedure. However, my full size (5") Kimber 1911 45 Auto doesn't fit (the safe is 3/4" to 7/8" too short). My wife's 4" Kimber 1911 9mm does fit.

Also, I can't silence the beeps (my dachshund starts to shake when he hears a beep), either because of incomplete directions, or a faulty unit.

Nonetheless, I can see why this unit won design awards. Probably only 5 percent of folks actually carry a 5" 1911. When Hornady comes out with a longer version, I'll purchase a second one, then we'll have "his and hers", in case we ever both need to park and go together into a building where carry is not permitted.

Seems very durable and strong but the cable system securing the safe to the car could be better. Was fairly easy to install once figured out. The RFID set up was simple to install and works well. Fits in My Lincoln MKX but wished the bladder was a little longer to be more secure.

All was as expected. I really love this thing. Feel confident storing my pistol in my car when I can't have it on me now. I also like the quick draw I get from it when seated in the car. The only oversight I had was seat adjustment. If I drop it off at the shop or let someone drive my vehicle, I need to deflate and push safe under seat to avoid messing things up.

The safe was easy to install. it came within a week very happy. the R.F.I.D. was easy to program. The safe's material is thick enough to make it hard to open without the proper code.
