LensWork's Review of JP Enterprises Bolt Carrier for Large Frame

The LMOS design of this bolt carrier weighs 2oz. less than the standard JP bolt carrier, and while 2oz. doesn’t seem like much, it definitely reduces the felt recoil in my .308 Winchester Aero Precision M5E1. Any time that you can reduce the reciprocating weight in a semi-automatic firearm (while maintaining reliability) the result will be less felt recoil. An added bonus of the lower weight means that on the forward stroke the muzzle will have less tendency to dip down, so you can stay on-target better resulting in faster, more accurate follow-up shots.

I got the polished stainless steel finish, and it has a mirror-like finish, so it cycles smoothly and cleaning it is a breeze; just wipe it down with a soft cloth and any gunk comes right off. JP includes a small packet of oil with the bolt carrier, and using their oil, the carrier still looks new after the first few hundred rounds.

Since it is a lightweight carrier, the rearward velocity of the carrier during recoil is greater than that of a standard weight carrier, so it may be necessary to adjust the weight of your buffer, or use an adjustable gas block. I use an Odin adjustable AR-10 carbine buffer with 2 tungsten weights (total weight 5.5oz.), a JP large frame carbine spring and an Aero Precision adjustable gas block (set 9 clicks down from fully open) on my Criterion 18” barrel with a rifle length gas tube and I have had zero function issues. My M5 reliably cycles everything from 130gr. - 185gr., hunting, military ball and match ammo without a single hiccup.
Pros:
  • Reduces felt recoil
Cons:
  • None
