GSXR's Review of LaRue Tactical Complete AR-15 Match Grade 16in 5.56x45mm Upper Receiver
I bought this upper because I have been hearing a lot of good things about the accuracy of Larue products. Historically I have owned cheap low grade uppers/barrels from companies like PSA & Troy. My skill level has increased to the point where I can outshoot a cheap AR, which was really getting frustrating especially at 300 yards. The price may be a little high on this product, but the workmanship and accuracy is second to none. I placed this upper on a Spikes lower and added a strike eagle 1-8x SFP scope. I cleaned the barrel thoroughly, then dried it and went strait to the range. It only took me 3-5 shots to sight in my scope. From there I went on to shoot some 3 & 5 shot groups. For this test I opted to use Federal Sierra Match King HPBT 69gr ammo. My best 3 shot group was a little under 1/2 inch moa, and my 5 shot groups were coming in between .5 to .75 MOA. I should also note it was 32F outside at the time, my hands were freezing, 10mph crosswind, just not ideal conditions. I did not perform any special break-in procedures, I would bet my groupings will get a little tighter once I have a few more rounds down the barrel, but for out of the box I am very happy so far. Also keep in mind the Streak Eagle 1-8 only has 1/2 moa adjustments. For the money you will not find a better scope than this. This barrel has a 1:8 twist which I think is the perfect twist, I am not a fan of 1:7 because in my experience it cannot stabilize a 55gr bullet. This was my next test. I proceeded to shoot some groups with cheap 55gr and cheap 62gr green tip ammo. To my delight my groupings were not far off from my match grade ammo test. Next I took the rifle out to the 300 yard range. I used a hold over and my 1st 3 shoot group landed all hits inside the bullseye of my 300 yard target. I repeated the test and again I landed a 3 shoot group inside the bull of my next target. I then put 20 rounds down range and landed all but 2 hits inside the 1st 10 point ring. I thought you could upload photos to these reviews, but not seeing that feature. Also worth nothing is that I added the VG6 Gamma break to this upper. I have not fired it without the break, but with it, the recoil is very light and easy to keep on target for follow-up shots etc. This upper comes with a matching headspaced bolt and carrier group which I am sure adds to the accuracy. When firing, the whole assembly feels very smooth, like a piece of glass, really just an absolute pleasure to fire. Firing was done from a bench with front and rear bags. Only negative I can think of is that this upper is a little on the heavy side, but for me that is not an issue, if you are looking for a light tactical build this is prob not for you then. I would have wished that the rail guards had an integrated QD mount, I had to add one via a m-lok attachment which is no big deal. What else, I was using a Geissele SSA 2 stage trigger, spikes buffer and spring, RRA Grip and lower parts, Magpul fixed stock, and BCM charging handle. When mating this upper to my spikes lower there was also virtually no slop or wiggle, very tight. These days though, I do prefer the Aero lowers and the extra detent that allows for making a super tight lower to upper fit. If I could get my hands on a Larue lower I would love to give that a try too, but for now I see now need, she is a shooter. If you have the coin, I highly recommend this brand, I'm sold.
Pros:
- Tight fit
- Butter smooth
- Sub MOA Accuracy
