Acceptable if you're on a budget - LaserMax Spartan Adjustable Fit LED Weapon Lights

Over the years, I've purchased two of these and over time, I've grown to not like them. I like the compact form of the unit and the aesthetic design of the unit, but this product has some major drawbacks.
1) The battery life is subpar. It's great that the unit takes AA batteries, but the battery life is terrible. I wouldn't go more than 6 months without replacing the battery, if you just leave it in the safe. If you plan on using the unit, don't expect to get more than 3 months out of the battery. What you save in initial cost, you'll pay for in batteries down the road.

2) The mounting system isn't ideal. You have to dismount the unit and basically split the unit in half to swap the battery, and while I've never noticed a shift in zero after remounting the unit, it's extremely inconvenient, given how often that you have to replace the battery. It would have been nice if they had designed the unit to where you could twist off the end of the battery compartment and pop out the battery to replace it, rather than having to remove the mounting screws and open one side of the unit.

3) The light output is subpar. I think this unit is acceptable for someone who's only planning on using it indoors and within 10-12 yards in a VERY low-light to no light environment. Outside of those parameters, the laser is fine, but the light is useless. If there is any light on in a room other than the light on this unit, then the light on this unit will be useless; there has to be pretty much no light for the light on this unit to be effective. It makes a great navigation light, but if you're trying to identify a threat, spend the extra money and go with a Streamlight.

4) The unit does not perform properly when the battery gets low. Jumping back to battery life, I'd say once you get to about 50% battery power, things stop working as they should on the unit. The laser works just fine independently up until the battery dies, the light however only works properly (independently) until you get to about 40%-35% battery life, then the light will only come on for about half of a second and drop out every time you press the activation button, even if you hold it. The same goes for activating the light and laser at the same time. Once you get to about 50%, the unit will malfunction (flickering when you press the activation button, when it shouldn't), or the unit won't stay activated and will drop out about a half of a second after pressing both activation buttons.

Also, there's a lack of holster options. Unless you plan on getting a custom kydex holster, you won't be able to find one.
Overall, I think this is an ok unit if you're on a tight budget, you need something with a light and a laser on it, and you can't afford anything else, but, if you can, there are better options. Yes, they cost more, but you get what you pay for.
