Great for Home Defense

Written on Mar 19, 2023

Every time I use this light, I realize just how much more I love it.

You know, 100 lumens doesn't sound like a lot, but, for what I use it for, it's certainly enough. I'd say as long as you're within 20 yards outdoors in low-light conditions or within any normal residential distance indoors, this light is perfect for scanning, searching, navigating, and identifying threats. I don't think it'll blind anyone, but it'll certainly provide you with enough information to decide how you want to proceed with whatever you're dealing with. The light has a nice hotspot and has more of a focus on a concentrated beam, while also providing some flood to give you some scope of situational awareness in the direction that you're looking. Overall, I think it's a great option for the money and form factor.

If I had any complaints it would be:
1) The battery type is uncommon, thus harder to source/replace. Battery life is good, but finding a replacement may or may not be difficult. I understand why it was chosen, it's just not as easily findable.

2) The laser point of aim can shift slightly, when pressing the activation buttons. Not a huge deal because you'll still easily be hitting whatever you're aiming at, at the distances you'll be using this thing for, but it should be noted. Not surprising, given the mounting method and that the housing is plastic instead of metal, but it's worth mentioning. I only notice it because I have a red dot mounted and I noticed that the laser would be shifted

My favorite, go-to compact weapon light.

Written on Nov 25, 2022

I've purchased several of these over the last few years, since Viridian switched to the third generation and I must say that this is my favorite compact weapon light/laser combo that's currently on the market.

This has been a great light for me and I would say it's output is similar to a Crimson Trace CMR-301. Both are suitable indoors and within short-medium ranges, with more of a focus on flood rather than having a defined hotspot. It's perfect for indoors; outdoors, I'd say you get about 25-50 yards of usable light, depending on lighting conditions.

If I did have any complaint, it would be that the tape switch and battery are both proprietary.
I don't care so much about the battery as I can just buy more and I like the concept of having an easily detachable battery, but if Viridian ever decided to stop making them, you're pretty much screwed.
My biggest complaint would be that the tape switch is proprietary. I've found a way around it, but, it would've been nice if they used a Crane laser plug instead of the system they're currently using. For one, it adds a lot of bulk for a compact light. Two, it would have been nice if you could use the light with other aftermarket switches. Particularly, if you run more than one device. Not necessary, but, I'm sure it's something that people consider when looking for weapon lights. More inter-compatibility means more sales. Also, doesn't help that the switch is around 2-3 inches long and can take up valuable real estate on a smalle

Worth the investment.

A few months ago, I'd been on a search to find a solution to control the humidity in one of my safes that required little to no input on my end. Originally, I just used some name-brand, fairly-inexpensive rechargeable desiccant packs, but, my issue with desiccant packs is that, if you're not frequently checking them or recharging them on a schedule, you won't know when to recharge them. This led me to look at some other solutions; one(s) that I could plug into an outlet and forget about.

The most recommended option was to purchase one of those humidity-controlling rods (a.k.a. golden rods), but I didn't like this option because of the amount of space the rods take up.

The next option that I came across was this PEET dryer, and, after some decision-making, I decided to go with this model, and, it has not disappointed me. When I received the dryer, I was a little concerned (and, also, annoyed) because the electrical plug at the end of the power cable comes disassembled, but, then, I realized that it's actually a genius move by the manufacturer, as, if you need to feed the cable through a safe wall, most safes only come with small holes in them to feed power cables through, and aren't large enough to fit the actual plug through. Aside from that one issue, this thing has been perfect. I've coupled it with a hygrometer (to monitor conditions), and, it's kept the temperature stable and the humidity at a reasonable level (in a climate-controlled environment), and I'm happy because

Perfect Little EDC Light

Written on Dec 11, 2021

I initially bought one of these as a relatively cheap, but quality light to use everyday at work, and this has quickly become my favorite little light. I love it because it’s simple, handy, rechargeable, and inexpensive. So much so that I’ve purchased several more just as backups and one to use around the house. I have bigger Streamlight lights, but I don’t necessarily carry them around everyday (mainly because they’re bigger and more expensive), but this one really does come in at a sweet spot where you get a lot of value for your money.

My only complaint (if there was one) would be that there’s no Ten-Tap or way to switch the activation modes. I would like to be able to switch it’s High-Low setting to Low-High, but with the amount of value you get with the MacroStream, I can live with the trade-off.

Perfect Fit For Springfield Hellcat

Written on Mar 24, 2020

These DeSantis Nemesis holsters always fit like a glove, and this one is no exception. I purchased one of these holsters to use with a Springfield Hellcat (non-OSP, OSP model will not fit with red dot mounted), to use to carry in a cargo pocket. It works out almost perfectly because the fin is stiff enough to keep the firearm upright in my pocket and when I need to pull it out, I can use the fin to hook on the edge of my pocket to pull the firearm from the holster. The outside texture of the holster is very grippy and once broken in, the holster has a little bit of retention. It's not a lot, but it's just enough that the firearm "seats" into place, and it would take the force of you turning the holster upside down and lightly shaking to get the firearm to unseat from the holster. I've used these holsters for years and I honestly believe that this is the best pocket holster on the market. It's a high quality holster at a relatively inexpensive price.

Just a note that I use it with Dickies cargo pants that have a velcro-type cargo pocket closure. It will also work with the zipper-type cargo pocket closure, however it will be tighter and you may end up damaging the finish on your firearm if you're too aggressive.

Acceptable If You're On A Budget

Written on Mar 23, 2020

Over the years, I've purchased two of these and over time, I've grown to not like them. I like the compact form of the unit and the aesthetic design of the unit, but this product has some major drawbacks.
1) The battery life is subpar. It's great that the unit takes AA batteries, but the battery life is terrible. I wouldn't go more than 6 months without replacing the battery, if you just leave it in the safe. If you plan on using the unit, don't expect to get more than 3 months out of the battery. What you save in initial cost, you'll pay for in batteries down the road.

2) The mounting system isn't ideal. You have to dismount the unit and basically split the unit in half to swap the battery, and while I've never noticed a shift in zero after remounting the unit, it's extremely inconvenient, given how often that you have to replace the battery. It would have been nice if they had designed the unit to where you could twist off the end of the battery compartment and pop out the battery to replace it, rather than having to remove the mounting screws and open one side of the unit.

3) The light output is subpar. I think this unit is acceptable for someone who's only planning on using it indoors and within 10-12 yards in a VERY low-light to no light environment. Outside of those parameters, the laser is fine, but the light is useless. If there is any light on in a room other than the light on this unit, then the light on this unit will be useless; there has to be pretty much no l

Great SERPA Substitute

Written on Mar 22, 2020

I normally use a BlackHawk SERPA holster for a Springfield XDM 9MM 4.5" w/ Vortex Venom when I take defensive pistol courses, but, given that some facilities ban the use of the SERPA holster, this holster makes a great alternative. The retention is easily adjustable and holds the firearm well enough to keep it from popping out while doing some light running around; I've combined mine with the BlackHawk drop-leg platform and it makes for a great package. My only complaint is that this is the longest model that I could find and it's designed for the 4" model. Luckily, the holster has an open bottom, so fitting the 4.5" model in is no problem, the end of the firearm just sticks out a little. If you're looking for an inexpensive holster and the SERPA has caught your eye, but you're worried about the locking mechanism being a problem, this holster makes a great substitute.
