Luther's Review of Hi-Lux Optics Malcolm 6x17mm Rifle Scopes, 3/4in Tube, Short Telescopic

The price is right and the optics are good. You get more than what you pay for. Other reviews have been critical of the mounts. The mounts are duplicates of the type of mounts used from about 1900 to 1920. Are they suitable for those persons wanting use the scope for multi-range .22 silhouette competition, the answer is no. You cannot move from one setting to another and be directly back on a preset setting. If that is the kind of mount that you want, then pay hundreds of dollars more and buy that type of mount. Some criticism has also been made of the fit and finish of the mounts. The mounts are made from investment castings and do show mould lines. This does not detract from the look of the mounts and certainly does not detract from the function. The scope comes with screw on lens caps, mounts, and mounting blocks for the barrel. The mounting blocks are cut on each side with either a square cut or a crescent cut to accommodate both Winchester and Unertl old style mounts. So when you mount them on your barrel, be sure of which way you are mounting in reference to the scope mount that you are using.
Now for the negatives: Both scope mounting blocks that were sent with the scope were drilled at .560 of an inch center to center. I am putting this on an old (1924 vintage) Model Winchester 52. Many if not most of the older rifles that this scope would be correct for have .560 spacing for the front mount and .860 for the rear. I have had to order new mounting blocks. That is a minor thing. I was actually surprised that they even included the blocks with the order, but if they do, they should give the option as to hole spacing. Secondly, under no circumstances use the Free Value Shipping offered by Optics Planet! The advertisement showed free 2 day shipping. When I placed my order, I thought that was what I was getting when I marked Free Value Shipping. Apparently I marked the wrong thing. It took nine days to travel from Illinois to western North Carolina, Roughly 685 miles. I could have traveled that distance by horseback faster. The package (Fedex) went from Illinois to Wisconsin to Tennessee to eastern North Carolina, where it was turned over to the US Postal Service who delivered it the next day in western North Carolina. Just be aware when you mark the shipping information that you are marking the proper one.
The scope seems to be well worth the money. Is it a $1000 Unertl scope? No. But then the price isn't $1000 either.
