Turn heads at the range!

by Old German, from OH, United States Written on September 2, 2022
I could not be more satisfied with this Hi-Lux Optics Malcolm 6x17mm 3/4in Tube Short Telescopic Rifle Scope purchased for Optics Planet.
I ordered it on 8/26/22, it arrived on 8/30/22 and was mounted and at the range on 8/31/22. Well done Optics Planet.
Having purchased one of the early Hi-Lux USMC 8x sniper scopes I expected a quality product and was not disappointed.
Fit and finish is excellent. Clarity and brightness is on par with any of my modern scopes.
Currently this scope is mounted on a 1930s vintage Winchester Model 52 "Speed Lock". This rifle included a vintage 4x Wollensak along with the factory receiver sights. The improvement in optical quality shown by the Hi-lux is truly delightful! It retains the vintage personality with modern performance. As I stated I could not be more satisfied.
This was my first purchase from Optics Planet. The asking price was the best of any retailer. This scope included free 2-day shipping. What else could I ask for.
Again, well done Optics Planet!!
Pros:
  • Over-all quality
Cons:
  • None
Best Used for:
  • Vintage rifles

Not the one pictured

by Neil, from WI, United States Written on November 16, 2021
The scope I received is not the one pictured. It came with a round style rear mount not the more squared off one pictured. Hi-Lux said they were changing to the more square style to give more adjustment. It also shows a sliding front mount that can move on recoil but mine is locked solid. Glass is good but 2 features I wanted weren't on this scope.

great scope

by Calvin Murdock, Verified Owner from ID, United States Written on September 7, 2021
Great glass, great quality build. Only thing I wish I knew was that the adjustment knobs in the rings don’t click. Past that it’s a great setup. The scope it’s self is great and would highly recommend.

A blessing for the vintage rifle enthusiast!

by LaRoy, from OK, United States Written on February 2, 2019
I put the my Wm. Malcom scope on a 1879 Stevens tip-up single shot rifle that I am restoring. Six power is perfect for a .22 and the reclined bbl. will yield all the accuracy that six power justifies. It complements the looks of the rifle perfectly and allows my 71 year old eyes to shoot like a younger man. The optics are clear and bright, all I could ask for. It looks like an original but functions like a modern scope with precise click adjustments. I love it and would buy another in a heart beat.
Pros:
  • Bright clear quality optics and solid rugged construction
Cons:
  • None
Best Used for:
  • Vintage rifles though it would work fine on any rifle but. May look a little strange on a modern style rifle.

A true vintage style rifle scope.

by LaRoy, from OK, United States Written on February 1, 2019
This is a neat little scope for a vintage rifle. I am putting mine on a 1879 Steven’s .22lr, tip-up rifle that I am restoring. The optics are clear and bright, the windage and elevation adjustments are firm and positive. It is hard to find fault with this scope.
Pros:
  • Everything mentioned above.
Cons:
  • A little pricey for a 6x fixed scope
Best Used for:
  • Vintage rifles such as Stevens favorite, etc. would look a little odd on a modern rifle.

Period scope copy

by Tom, from MT, United States Written on July 13, 2018
This is my second Hi-Lux Malcolm scope. They are well made with excellent optics and correct for rifles from the late 19th and early 20th century period. They are also about half the price of similar scopes from other makers. My first one is around 5 years old with no issues whatsoever.

Malcolm/Hi-Lux 6x scope

by Luther, from NC, United States Written on January 4, 2018
The price is right and the optics are good. You get more than what you pay for. Other reviews have been critical of the mounts. The mounts are duplicates of the type of mounts used from about 1900 to 1920. Are they suitable for those persons wanting use the scope for multi-range .22 silhouette competition, the answer is no. You cannot move from one setting to another and be directly back on a preset setting. If that is the kind of mount that you want, then pay hundreds of dollars more and buy that type of mount. Some criticism has also been made of the fit and finish of the mounts. The mounts are made from investment castings and do show mould lines. This does not detract from the look of the mounts and certainly does not detract from the function. The scope comes with screw on lens caps, mounts, and mounting blocks for the barrel. The mounting blocks are cut on each side with either a square cut or a crescent cut to accommodate both Winchester and Unertl old style mounts. So when you mount them on your barrel, be sure of which way you are mounting in reference to the scope mount that you are using.
Now for the negatives: Both scope mounting blocks that were sent with the scope were drilled at .560 of an inch center to center. I am putting this on an old (1924 vintage) Model Winchester 52. Many if not most of the older rifles that this scope would be correct for have .560 spacing for the front mount and .860 for the rear. I have had to order new mounting block...
