Buffaloman's Review of Hi-Lux Optics Malcolm 6x17mm Rifle Scopes, 3/4in Tube, Short Telescopic

I received the scope and mounts several weeks ago. The scope seems to be well made and optics clear. I haven't finished mounting it yet so I can't speak to the accuracy.

While the scope is good, the mounts are lower quality. They are not finished to the same level of quality as the scope. They look to be cold blued and not finished to any degree. I have three comments on the product.

1) While the instructions are lacking as to how to mount the scope, there is information on how to sight the scope in.
2) The mounts did not come with any screws to mount the base plates onto the barrel. It took $20 and 10 days to get the correct screws for the Chiappa Baby Sharps. They are #6 x 48 threads. I was also told that sometimes Chiappa uses #6 x 40 scope taps so check your rifle before ordering.
3) The mounts come with 60 degree dovetail bases that are to be screwed into the barrel then the scope mounted on the dovetails. ISSUE- The bases provided are curved to match a round barrel. My Sharps has an octagon barrel. While Taylor Arms states that a curved base plate is adequate to mount on a flat sided barrel, I think its not a good idea. Flat bases can be ordered from Hi-Lux. Actually you can get three types of bases: predrilled-curved, predrilled-flat and no drilled base. The first fits round barrels, the second flat barrels and third for barrels that have been taped at a non standard spacing.

Lastly I wish to say that the Hi-Lux company has provided great service via email and telephone. They have been so helpful I am rating the scope as high as possible even before I shoot with it. I purchased the scope with mounts as an alternative to a $1,000 or more Malcolm scope made in the US because a) I am not into BPC competition shooting yet and 2) can't afford the best so this is a compromise. After reading other reviews there has been negative comments about the scope mounts provided with the scope. Hi-Lux does offer a higher quality adjustable mount for about $270. This mount costs as much as the scope. Other US manufacturers offer the same type of mount but at a higher quality for about $500. The second issue discusses was that the scope was not waterproof. After speaking with the company rep, I was assured it was waterproof and if there becomes an issue, to return the scope for repair or replacement.

After mounting the scope I'll add to the review as to its accuracy.
Pros:
  • economical
  • best magnification
  • proporational for a baby Sharps
Cons:
  • bases for only a round barrel
  • Mounting instructions can be improved
Best Used for:
  • original or reproductions of vintage rifles
