Most Helpful Positive Review Excellent Starter Press
I'm new to reloading. I know there are plenty of presses on the market but an significantly increased cost. The quality of the components appears to be good. As a newbie to reloading, I did not want to invest thousands to find out I don't like it. So far so good. The breech locking mechanism makes replacing dies a breeze. Also, this kit gives me everything I need to go forward. Excellent place to start...

Lee Breech Lock Challenger Kit

by Salvo, Verified Owner from NC, United States Written on September 25, 2023
I have to thank Optics Planet for the discounted price on this. I am waiting for the projectiles on backorder so I haven't gotten the chance to use it. I decided to get into reloading after seeing the cost of the .458 Socom ammunition. This kit seemed like a nice, entry-level reloading kit so I jumped on it for the price. To start, I decided to reload 9mm lugers for some experience. If you're new to reloading and you're considering this kit, get yourself Lee's second-edition manual too. The second edition contains all of the first edition's information plus tons of new loading data. Overall, the kit contains what I need for 9mm lugers. I can confirm that Lee's 9mm Deluxe die kit, not included, does work with this kits locking system. Happy reloading folks.
Pros:
  • AFFORDABILITY
Cons:
  • lots of plastic
Best Used for:
  • beginner

Great starter setup.

by Lost in the woods, Verified Owner from IA, United States Written on March 23, 2021
Perfect for the entry level reloader that doesn't have a ton of room to work with. Leaves plenty of room for upgrades later on down the road as well. If you're going to venture into reloading large quantities of amo, I would opt for a digital scale. The beam scale is great, but it consumes quite a bit of time.
Pros:
  • None
Cons:
  • None that I can think of.
Best Used for:
  • Beginner reloading

Got this as my first press and love it.
Arrived by UPS, with a normal wait time.
Really strong design, easy to set up, just pay attention to the details.
Can't do better for a beginner up to a precision shooter.

Nice set to learn with

by Arah, from VA, United States Written on August 2, 2020
This is a good kit to begin with, When you follow all the instructions it will help you learn how to reload properly. Powder scales are very sensitive but workable. The reloading manual has good information on powder types and uses but the reloading data is formatted strange. Best to use their website or other manual for load data. You will need a way to clean your brass if its been used already. A nice addition to this kit would be 2 universal reloading trays. You should own or buy a set of calipers to check the length of your reloads. All in all its a fantastic set to learn and get started with. Read the instructions and apply some common sense and you will gain a new skill.
Pros:
  • Nice set for beginners
Cons:
  • Need a second manual
Best Used for:
  • Beginners learning how to reload

Good starter kit but MISLEADING PICTURE

by Crow, Verified Owner from CA, United States Written on December 3, 2019
First off, please note that this kit DOES NOT come with the red box of Universal Shell Holders pictured in the photo!! The photo is actually just a collection of Lee products and is not 100 percent accurate in depicting what you will get!

My kit included: Challenger Press / Perfect Powder Measure / Scale / Hand Primer (the LEE Autoprime, which is not the one shown here) and autoprime shell holders / primer pocket cleaning and chamfer tools / Lee Value Quick Trim case trimmer crank (die not included) / Lee drill bit case trimmer / press primer attachments and spent primer tube / tube of Lee Case Lube.

I spent over an hour on the phone with Optics Planet and Lee Precision trying to get this figured out. If you look at the Lee website, the Breechlock Challenger kit photo there is consistent with what I did (and didn't) get, but one reason I ordered from Optics Planet was because I needed the Universal Shell Holder kit! OP finally admitted the mistake and sent me a free box of universal shell holders, which was super cool of them, but there's no excuse for a company advertising a kit as including items it does not- so, buyer beware, (and hopefully OP changes this photo so there's no more confusion!)

As far as the kit itself, I'm really happy overall. I'm a novice reloader, so I didn't want to get in over my head at first, and I'd say that this kit is perfect for starting out. The press seems beefy and I've thus far deprimed and sized about a hundred cases- it works smooth. Mak...

Fantastic starter kit

by Ohio shooter, Verified Owner from OH, United States Written on March 5, 2018
This is a fantastic starter kit, and is great for the budget minded reloader wanting to get started in this aspect of the sport. The hand held primer can be a little finicky so pay extra mind when priming using this method. Purchase a couple of extra quick change bushings for your dies and you'll be able to fly through reloading on a single stage. The powder thrower holds its setting well and is accurate as long as you're not using extruded powder. I'll be upgrading to a better beam scale first, as this one is a little finicky and when off by .5 gr it doesn't show the deviance accurately.

If you want to see this set up used I recommend checking out the Johnny's reloading bench page on YouTube as he did a great series on getting into reloading using this exact kit.
Pros:
  • cost
  • Build quality
  • Everything but dies included
Cons:
  • accessories included are beginner grade
Best Used for:
  • beginners

Solid piece of equipment

by Chris Hyde, Verified Owner from MI, United States Written on January 6, 2017
After searching the internet and youtube for a reloading press for beginners this set kept coming up as the one to buy. I bought this as a newcomer to reloading, it is easy to use, easy to set up, the kit comes with everything you need to get started except for the brass, powder, primers and bullets.
