Long Range Shooting Necessity

by Jeremy L., Gear Expert from IL, United States Written on November 5, 2015
Let's get this out of the way right away, yes this is expensive for a spotting scope. If you're a one tag a year hunter then there are a ton of options half the price of this Leupold spotting scope that would probably suit your needs better.

With that being said, if you're the type of sportsmen that is traveling thousands of miles for the perfect bull elk and spending a considerable amount of time just to take one or two long distance shots, it'd be very difficult to find a better spotting scope than this particular 12-40x60 HD Golden Ring from Leupold.

Why???

For starters, it comes in a sweet custom case with everything from a tripod, soft cover, strap, window mount, and even a camera mount for all you digiscopers out there.

Clarity. This is the most important selling point for me on majority of optics especially with binos or spotting scopes. Not to sound cliché but in true Leupold fashion the edge to edge clarity is second to none in spotting scopes in this price range which is extremely important when glassing a herd of game where you want to have the best view of every elk/tom/mountain goat in your field of view.

Along with the crystal clear clarity of this spotting scope, the 60mm objective has excellent light transmission for those times more often than not where daylight isn't working in your favor.

The build quality of this specific Leupold scope and all of their "Golden Ring" line of optics is phenomenal. Every knob, mag ring, and eyepiece turns and moves with...

Crystal clear!

by Jeff, from WY, United States Written on June 11, 2022
After my last trip to Yellowstone, I decided it was time for a major spotting scope upgrade; the entry-level "angled" one I'd been using for years is still OK, but I was tired of the always fuzzy view of truly distant critters. Choosing Leupold was easy, as I have several Gold Ring rifle scopes and a great pair of Leupold binoculars that have always performed well. My biggest decision was straight-view vs angled and I'm glad I went with the straight one. Not that I recommend using it like a monocular, but it is possible to do just that, especially at lower magnifications. Just hold it up to your eye by hand like a binocular (sideways is easiest) and you can easily line up on distant objects instinctively. Very helpful when making quick scans in multiple directions. Then, once you spot something worth looking at in detail, a tall tripod is best if you are going to stand, while a short one can work if seated, so plan for another couple of hundred bucks of investment to get the best use out of your new scope. I will comment that the mag and focus rings are both a bit stiff at this point, but I'll bet it breaks in a bit over time. The field case that came with the scope is a good fit and very handy, but I need to do a little digging to see if I can get an inexpensive camera filter that will fit the objective end of the tube to protect that end of the glass from dust, dirt and fingerprints. Last item: I have a very inexpensive phone-scope mount and it "bolts" on like it w...

Solid glass that is Crystal clear. Will be taking it on a hunt this week. Leupold quality. Lightweight and packable. Zoom adjustment is firm yet smooth. Fits good on a Slick tripod. Plus of course made in USA. That's important to me. I will not buy optics made in China.

Leupold 12-40x60mm HD Golden Ring Spotting Scope worth every penny

by Shelcoc, from AZ, United States Written on July 11, 2019
I have use a Burris spotting scope for years at the time I purchased it I wanted the Leupold but just could not afford. Last year I could afford and up graded to the 12-40 HD right away it was much clearer and easier to acquire an object at distance. The best thing I can say for it is; I spotted the cow elk I killed at four miles away (just scaled from topo map so as to give an accurate description not a best guess) with a half hour of shooting light and I could postilion identify there were three cows and no bulls. Of course I had to use roads to close and with such little light have some luck guessing where they would come down off the mountain but managed to hike in a hundred yards and caught them coming down to the meadow to feed. If it was not for the clarity of this spotting scope I would have had no chance to identify and close in the time I had.
Pros:
  • Clarity, brightness, extras
Cons:
  • na
Best Used for:
  • Soptting

Product was as expected and price was great. Fast shipping. Planning to use on an upcoming elk hunt and choose this model for the weight and size while still having good magnification to pack in and out. Have used it spotting deer off my deck and imagine quality has been great even on low light conditions.

I have been increasingly impressed with all Leupold scopes as the Spotting scope is my 4th high end scope, the others being rifle scopes and binoculars. I had grown up married to Zeiss and Nikon but am very satisfied with all leupold products.
Pros: Superb clarity and quality
Cons: heavy but manageable with a tripod
