I've never really had problems with the USGI green followers, but I had some left-over Gen 2 magpul followers and decided to buy more for the rest of my Teflon coated USGI mags. These latest Magpul followers have some slight differences in retaining the mag spring but otherwise function the same as the ones I had from about 15 years ago.

They literally don't tilt and function extremely smoothly. Are they mandatory for bench shooting? Nah.
