Mariano's Review of Nanuk 990 Hard Gun Case w/ Foam Insert for AR, 47.1in

The case is similar to Pelican; solid and of great (not high) quality, but you will hear a hiss if you press firmly on the body, which leads me to question the seal installed on the lid. The locking mechanism works and affords you the ability to add two locks to the end corners of the case. The wheels roll smoothly although I have not rolled this on anything other than a smooth surface yet. Of course, please remember this is not a safe. It would almost be the complete opposite of one because it can be rolled away.

A standard 16" AR with optics and BUIS fits in here almost perfectly. The foam is soft, yet sturdy enough to make easy cut outs to fit your weapon with its accessory (hand stop, laser, bipod, etc.). I had to make a cut-out for the front sight and it looks very clean, keeping the weapon in place. I place eight Magpul magazines in their place with what looks like a 1/4" exposure above the foam line.

Of significant note:

1. This is not as commodious as a soft 36" NCSTAR VISM double carbine case where I can carry two adjustable ARs and a small cleaning kit, or one-AR and include a larger OTIS ELITE Universal Tactical Cleaning System (not purchased from Optics Planet).

2. If you own a larger full-size pistol, specifically a .45 caliber; the rear-sight/back-slide corner may stick up higher than a Compact or Sub-compact. A Sig Sauer P220 Combat has a threaded barrel that add's 1/2 inch to the length and slightly affects the geometry. Nothing serious.

3. If you own a full-size .45 cal. pistol, please note that your magazines may not fit in the pistol magazine inserts as perfectly as shorter magazines may. I ended up placing two 10-round magazines (loaded) near the pistol itself; one on each side.

Overall, very happy with the purchase, and would recommend.
