Another good budget optic from NcSTAR

by pda0211, Verified Owner from CA, United States Written on March 30, 2018
Bought this optic for my 10.5" AR-15 pistol. Wanted something that I could use for close quarters, but still take advantage of ballistics of .223/5.56 round out to 200m. This scope will do just that. First, the glass is good quality for a Chinese made optic, and the reticle is good enough for plinking and home defense. Agree that the blue and red light for the reticle is crude, but does work in low light - home defense middle of the night scenario. The 1.1 setting is a bit tricky to get used to with both eyes open, but not too difficult.
If I had one con here, it's the flip up lens caps. They are cheap, cheap, cheap. The front one broke off mine the first time I tried to retrieve the rifle from the floor. Would rather have bikini covers, maybe clear on the ends like they have for Vortex scopes. Still, for the price, you get a good optic that will reach out to distance AND a decent CQB capability. Scope rings are good, but a bit on the heavy side; unfortunate, as the scope itself is relatively light compared to other 1-4 x 20 scopes. Turrets are easily adjustable without a tool, with audible and tactile clicks.
Pros:
  • Lightweight
  • Inexpensive
  • good glass
  • comes with scope rings
  • turrets are easily adjustable
Cons:
  • reticle lights are too bright for low light
  • flip up caps are flimsy

Plenty good enough for the money.

Just got this scope. Arrived in perfect order. Looks and feels sturdy, and works, right out of the box. It’s also the lightest 1-4 powered scope I’ve been able to find. A definite plus.

In mounting, I noticed that they included ROUND scope rings for this octagonal scope. If it weren’t for the rubber armor, this would never have worked, but it does. The rubber armor has the downside of making tiny adjustments to the scope’s angle, while tightening the rings, impossible. My scope is a fraction of a degree off of perfectly vertical, but it works.

The illuminated reticle is typical NcStar. They always over-illuminate their reticles, such that the illumination is a bit overpowering in low light. Also, the red is a great color for illumination, but NcStar also uses blue. Really? Blue?!?! This is the color that glares the most in low light, and washes out in daylight! Yeah, I use the red, only.

The magnification is supposed to start at 1.1, but it’s more like 1.25. This leaves a tiny bit of split-image, while using the both-eyes-open technique, but still acceptable. It’ll just never feel exactly like a red-dot scope, but it’ll do the job. The 4x magnification is good. Having the option of going between the two is a must-have!

I haven’t got this scope to the range, but it’s not my first NcStar, and my experience has been good for their products holding zero. This scope suits my needs better than anything else, on the market, and as long as it performs on the range, I’ve got my sc...
