Kyle's Review of NightForce SHV 4-14x50mm Rifle Scope, 30mm Tube, First Focal Plane

This is my first but certainly not last Nightforce scope. I bought the scope for mounting on my 6.5 creedmoor rifle with the intention of shooting it at 500-700 yds hunting whitetail deer and groundhogs. It has what i consider the ideal magnification range for hunting at med to long range. Can be turned down to 5x for close in shots and fast target acquisition but enough to easily line up a shot on a whitetail at 650. I was recently invited to shoot at 650 and the iconic 1000 yds by a buddy and knew that i was on the lower side of ideal mag range for the 1000yd in comparison to my vortex Viper pst 6-24 sitting on my 300 mag but i had to try it out. During the 650 yd shots it was an absolute cakewalk getting hits on the 10" steel plate and 2L soda bottles did the ballistic calculations for 13.3 MOA elevation and the scope tracked perfectly with the first shot being just off the left edge due to a 6mph crosswind a simple windage adjustment put me dead center of the target. We moved out to 1000 and had 34.1 moa adjustment due to shooting at a 6° incline. And again the scope tracked flawlessly for 1000 then back to 650 and 200 yd with all of my elevations being perfect for each range. The scope was crystal clear despite being 87 degrees and 90%+ humidity where as my Viper when at max magnification had a significant haze to it but in all fairness it was at 24x not 14x so i dialed that back to 14 and the haze went away but the view through the scope still wasnt as nice as the nightforce. For being Nightforce's "low end" scope I'm extremely impressed, at a price tag of around 1200 yes it is a bit salty compared to a Nikon or Vortex in the same mag range but is of no comparison. Having used this scope in comparison to Vortex Viper pst gen 1, Leopold vx3, Burris XTR and a few others not even worth mentioning it is worth the little extra to be able to watch your bullets arc in on steel at 1000 yds 2 seconds before you hear the all so sweet clang and watching steel dance. Would i recommend this scope to anyone that want a scope for 400-1000 yds? Absolutely. Would i buy it again? Next paycheck I get it's replacing my viper pst.
