Has Some Shortcomings but Overall is a Good Scope

by Uncle Doug, Verified Owner from TX, United States Written on January 10, 2024
Based on extreme satisfaction with my Nikko Stirling 6-18 Targetmaster scope, I ordered this Panamax 8-24 model for greater magnification, (foolishly) assuming that it would have the same features as the TM I already owned. Yes, the disparity in features was revealed (with careful evaluation) in the item description, so the mistake was mine alone, but to prevent others from the same oversight, please note: First, the Panamax does not have left-side-turret parallax adjustment. Instead, parallax adjustment is via twisting the very stiff 50mm lens housing, which prevents viewing while the adjustment is made. Second, the windage and elevation turrets are capped and completely different from the TM....more like for hunting than for target shooting. Third, the light box is quite tight, requiring careful return to an exact viewing position. Fourth, all these shortcomings are delivered at approximately double the price of the superior Targetmaster scope. Yes, the Panamax functions fairly well as a hunting scope, with decent optics, but feature-wise it falls far short of the much more affordable Targetmaster. Bottom Line: If you can live with a max of 18x instead of 24x, buy the Targetmaster and you'll be getting a much better scope.
Pros:
  • Construction, Decent Optics
Cons:
  • Cost, Parallax Adjustment, Turrets, Tight Light Box
Best Used for:
  • hunting
