Raffpap's Review of SIG SAUER OPMOD ROMEO7S 1x22mm Compact Reflex 2 MOA Red Dot Sight
A couple years ago I began outfitting all of my rifles, blinkers included, with Shake Awake/MOTAC sights. My MSRs and Mini 14 ended up with Holosun HS515GM sights, while two 10/22 rifles dressed up in ATI Strikeforce stocks got Northtac Ronin P-11s. My remaining 10/22 in a Tapco Intrafuse stock got a Holosun HS510C open reflex that I refused to sell. But my Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22, dressed up in FDE accents (Magpul BUIS, angled fore grip, magazines, rail covers, cheek pad, Sightmark lopro light/laser combo-pure gimmick! lol) presented a challenge because I was dead set on an FDE sight and there's really not a lot of options.
I could easily have opted for yet another Romeo 5 or Holosun 403B which are available. But in this case I wanted something similar to my HS515GM sights with see-thru pop up lense covers in addition to FDE finish. I've always like that setup and the additional protection given to the actual lenses, and I don't have to fumble with bikini covers or problematic solid lens caps. Enter this Sig Sauer Romeo7S OPMOD which immediately caught my eye.
For starters, Opticsplanet got it to my mailbox in interior Alaska in just 4 business days. The sight is well built, beautifully finished, lightweight, and compact. It uses commonly available AAA batteries, with one included. It is a slim, lean and mean sight with a very small signature when used, much like my Holosuns. Its FDE color matches up perfectly with the other FDE components on this rifle. It's MOTAC feature works perfectly, It sleeps in about 2 minutes and awakes at the slightest movemen, to the last brightness setting. It zeroed effortlessly at 50 yards on its plinker. The adjustment turrets are exposed, marked, have no tiny caps prone to loss, and give positive audible and tactile clicks. The locking nut mount is about as solid a setup I've seen outside of locking QD mounts. It does exhibit a bit of haloing effect inside if the intensity is too high, but to be fair most sights do that. When I take it outside said halo disappears. I have a bit of astigmatism at my age, so this sight's 2 MOA dot gives me a slight bit of flaring like my other sights do. Not the sight's fault, it's just me! I can't comment on longterm durability yet, but I see nothing to indicate this sight won't outlast me on this plinker.
My only gripe, and it's a small one, is the location of the intensity knob. It's on the right rear of the sight, whereas I've become accustomed to and prefer intensity buttons on the left or top of my sights, where my left hand does all the work, leaving my right to secure the rifle. But hey, I knew that going into this purchase. Besides, it's got MOTAC, so I'll just set it and leave it!
This sight may not fit every shooter's needs, but kudos to Opticsplanet for turning out this OPMOD sight in FDE, which solved my dilemma the moment I saw it. Thanks, guys and gals!
