Even though I have a regular action rod, I purchased this one due to the extra stabilization offered by the “sail” that fits up into the upper receiver gas tube area. That extra stabilizer is the difference between a successful disassembly on an over tightened barrel nut, or a cracked upper receiver due to the torque stress. The stainless this part was made of is also a plus.

I like the rugged construction of this tool, and when it was offered in a rust resistant finish at a lower price, who could resist.

This tool makes it much easier to work on my upper receiver — especially removing/installing and torquing the barrel nut safely, no matter how tight or seized it is. You don't risk damaging your upper receiver or barrel extension index pin. It works by engaging both the barrel extension lugs and the charging handle channel, distributing torque evenly and protecting the index pin.
Build quality is excellent: solid 4140 ordnance-grade steel, no sharp edges. It mounts vertically or horizontally in a standard bench vise, for barrel service/installation, scope mounting/adjustment, muzzle device changes, or anything else needing the upper stabilized.
Fits standard AR-15 platforms with M4/M16 barrel extensions (forged and billet uppers). I got the nickel finish, which as far as I can tell is exclusive to OpticsPlanet — I haven't found this finish new anywhere else. This tool should last forever.

Trying to remove a muzzle device without using this receiver rod is suicide for your rifle. Just using a vice won't work, as you run the risk or torquing your actual upper receiver while trying to get the muzzle device off. It is used to secure barrel nuts and other upper receiver parts, and the first time I secured the rod in the upper receiver and then into the vice, my muzzle device came right off. Well worth the money, it is a solid tool for at home gunsmithing!

The Midwest Industries Nickel finish Upper Receiver Rod gets top marks. It provides the best support, especially for barrel nut and muzzle device changes because it supports the entire upper. The torque is applied thru the lugs, the charging handle channel and the upper evenly, so you get complete torque transfer to your nut, without some of the energy twisting your upper.

Nickel finish also makes it really easy to clean.

This thing is the same as the one you get from Midwest but cheaper. Make sure you don't clock your barrel and destroy your expensive parts. Well worth the coin.
