JB's Review of Primary Arms OpticsPlanet Exclusive 5x36 Gen III Compact Prism Scope w/ACSS AURORA Reticle

Wanted it in black but for $259 with the ACSS Aurora, it's a steal. $70 more to go to black, so I'll deal with FDE. It seems to be hard to find the ACSS Aurora reticle these days, so glad I got one when I could. Quality feel to the optic overall. Glass clarity is very good. Edge to edge clarity is very good. Pleased with the glass quality, light transmission. Eye relief and eyebox are to be expected. I don't know why others are complaining about the reticle -- my eyes suck and I can see it just fine. Illumination is excellent. Red or green is a nice touch, although I prefer red. Illumination knob is a bit stiff but solid and will likely loosen up. Windage and elevation adjustments are positive and tactile, not mushy at all. Also, not sure why anyone is complaining about the eye relief...it's a prism...they all have the same issue from my experience. It's eye relief is significantly better than an ACOG 4x though. Yes, it would be nice if the optic could be mounted a bit further back but ditch the rear BUIS and it works fine. You have to get up on it a bit but again, I haven't heard of a prism where you didn't have to. If you want more cantilever in the mount...get the 3x MicroPrism. Show me any other 5x prism that mounts back further than this one -- haven't found one. Some guys complain about stuff, just to complain it seems. Anyhow, the mount seems sturdy. Even with 1x more magnification, the FOV at 100 yards is only 5 feet less than the ACOG 4x. Overall I really can't complain for the money. Adding the Primary Arms SLx micro reflex on top and I'll have a poor-man's ACOG/RMR setup for $460. I also prefer the micro red dot to mount up front, vs the rear. Lastly, this setup is at least $1000 cheaper and since I'm not on deployment in the sandbox, I think it'll work just fine. ;) Well done Primary Arms.
Pros:
  • Overall quality to price ratio
Cons:
  • Nothing thus far
Best Used for:
  • Budget ACOG / RMR type setup for everything but professional work.
