Brett M's Review of Primary Arms SLx 4-14x44mm Rifle Scopes, 30mm Tube, First Focal Plane (FFP)

I spent a lot of time researching an entry-level scope. It is my first VRO purchased for a new Bergara B-14 HMR chambered in .308 cal. I am interested in entering the competitive shooting world but I am on a fixed budget so price for everything is paramount. The scope features are fantastic for the price; however, the glass clarity and zoom range are not ideal for precision shooting at long distances (> 800 yds). I knew going in to this purchase that it has BDC factored in for 175 and 168 gr SMK ammo. Unfortunately, what I can find at this time without breaking the bank is 7.62x51 NATO 147 gr ammo. As such, the scope has some inherent limitations if you opt to use different bullet weights or velocities or choose to eventually do custom hand loads. I did like the range estimation feature but admittedly, the recticle is a bit busy and for a novice like me, it's a bit visually overwhelming. My neighbor, more experienced in LRP shooting suggested I look at the Anthlon Optics series--specifically the Midas TAC 6-24x50mm. While I compared the Midas TAC to the Helos to the Argos, the main difference I found between the Argos and the Midas TAC was the HD glass clarity. The Helos, seems to have the same non-HD glass that the Argos has; however, it is somehow slightly better and the turrets supposedly are slightly better. Problem with the Helos is it does not offer a Zero stop feature and the recticle does not have the expanding grid below the crosshairs. So for the cost difference, the Helos really isn't a better option and I couldn't justify the near 2x price increase to the Midas TAC as a new enthusiast to LRP shooting. As such, I have returned the PA for the Anthlon Argos 6-24x50mm. the PA 6-14x44mm would make a good selection for an AR platform for tactical shooting but for LRP, it's ok, but not the best for an entry-level VRO.
Pros:
  • zero stop
  • range estimation
  • Illuminated horseshoe reticle
  • cheveron for qucik target aquisition
Cons:
  • glass quality for longer distances
  • very tight magnification adjustment
Best Used for:
  • Tactical shooting
  • AR Platform
