Most Helpful Positive Review Gold Standard
I bought this to use as a range officer at a covered outdoor range and for use with long guns as well as pistols. These work great for carring on a conversation in a normal manner while gunfire is occuring closeby. Words are not clipped off, the gunfire is atenuated down to a safe level....

Most Helpful Negative Review Worst product of its type available
Absolutely the worst product I have encountered. Bought these to replace a $40.00 set of Peltors I had picked up from Walmart. I wanted something with a higher noise reduction rating as I already suffer from partial hearing loss and was willing to spend more money for a better product. I was totally...

Best I’ve owned

by Carter Russell, from DE, United States Written on January 5, 2023
I’m a retired heavy equipment operator. I used these for work and wore them for hours on end without issue. I could sit on a running D8 dozer and hear my foreman talking to me with no problem. The set that I bought over twenty years ago I still have and use, now that I’m retired, when I’m cutting grass or woodworking. They’re actually my second pair, the first ones were stolen. I would highly recommend these to anyone who needs hearing protection.
Pros:
  • Comfortable
  • highest nrr
Cons:
  • Probably the price but protecting your hearing is not something to go cheap on, trust me.
Best Used for:
  • Any situation that requires hearing protection. Shooting, running heavy equipment, cutting grass, woodworking, etc.

I wouldn't recommend for indoor range use

by James, from CA, United States Written on November 27, 2020
Sturdily built and comfortable to wear but very crude industrial design. The intra ear cup foam sliver that covers the battery and electronics are flimsy and not confidence-inspiring. The "+ -" markings inside the battery cradles are frustratingly difficult to see and installing the batteries lack a definitive "click." Volume knobs seem unnecessarily proud of ear cup surface for bare hands and have overly generous travel from min-max. Subtle detents would help user intuitively adjust both ears to same level quickly.

These hearing protectors seem adept at conveying speech clearly while reducing gunshot noise - just not enough for indoor ranges.
Pros:
  • Sturdy build
Cons:
  • Poor performance for indoor range
Best Used for:
  • outdoor

Good for the Money

by Michaelangelo, from PA, United States Written on April 27, 2020
Mine have worked well over the past several months, both rain and sunshine. These are comfortable and protect your ears well if you're outdoors. I do not suggest using these indoors, unless you add additional ear plugs underneath. The sound quality is very good too. I had the Peltor 5M Sports, or whatever they're called, and they were not only uncomfortable to wear, as they didn't have padding up top, but the sound quality almost bit into your ears, like nails on a chalkboard x10 to the F Me power. Walker Razors aren't bad for the money, but they aren't as comfortable and they don't protect your ears as well. I shoot a decent bit, almost every weekend, so these were worth it for me. I was shocked at how bad that pair of Peltors was. But maybe I got a lemon. I dunno. I didn't get a lemon for these Proears.

Poor Quality Plastic Materials in Headband

by Jay, from NC, United States Written on April 5, 2020
Over the years of enjoying my pursuit of Long Range Precision Marksmanship, I have purchased many fine products from Optics Planet. This product is not one of them. While the electronics within the headset work as advertized, the plastic in the headband is totally inadequate to the task.
Yesterday, while simply removing the headset from my head, one side of the dual sliding plastic ratchet components within the headband simply snapped off... fracturing and snapping back against my bare pate, gashing my scalp to the bone, and drawing blood.
Having researched the history of this product, I now find out that others have experienced similar issues, but may not have actually injured themselves. Either way, to have this problem occur on a nearly $300.00 electronic headset is ridiculous. At the very least, I expect to have replacement parts sent to me at no charge.

Pros:
  • Excellent electronics
Cons:
  • Skull / Eye hazzard
Best Used for:
  • wear head protection under

Awesome -- and should be for the price

by Jay, Verified Owner from HI, United States Written on May 10, 2018
I'll qualify this review by saying, I've not used any other electronic earpro than Walker's Razor Slim, and that is a very hi-value, if definitely not equal, set of e-muffs. Prior to this I'd used 32dB-NRR non-powered earpro, as well as doubled up with 30-32NRR foam earplugs as well as used them alone. My review is for this set of Tac Slim Golds doubled with 32dB-NRR foam earplugs.

One area you'll appreciate the (very) high price vs. even the rather expensive Peltor Tac 500s... is the comfort. The earcups are generous for my normal, non-Dumbo ears... and switched off, keep the scary world and its 50BMG reports from three stalls away (outdoors, under a red iron/wood roof) noticeably out of decibel danger last range day -- in fact, when then shooter squeezed off that Barrett, I'd feel the report more than hear it. .223 is a mild pop, and remarkably when switched on, you can hear your buddy in the next stall speaking just fine, just like in the video on the site (I'd noticed it all day, and it still seems like magic). The headband is padded and very comfy for the whole day at the range -- something not ditto'd for the Walkers. They are also deceptively light for their size -- easy to push up onto your head when the range is cold.

My own 9mm P320's report was like a clap of hands from ten feet away -- and versus the Walkers (which are quite a bit slower to react to >82dB than these Golds -- for the price, expected), you don't get that sliver of amplified report sneaking in unde...

Pros:
  • light
  • Comfort
  • Magical noise attenuation w/o affecting speech
  • Does not interfere with cheek weld
  • Can adjust both ears independently
  • 28dB-NRR is superior to closest competitor's design
Cons:
  • Does not fold up compactly
  • Cost very high (OP's price was great tho)
  • Somewhat delicate earcup pivots reported
  • Earcup material does not seem very durable (PE offers replacements)
Best Used for:
  • Indoor ranges (doubled up w/ foam earpro)
  • Large-calibre weapons
  • Hunting (can turn up amplification for each ear)
  • IPSC or other competition

Pro ears gold slim electronic muffs

by Pro Ears, from PA, United States Written on May 17, 2016
Excellent product and worth the money to save on hearing. Lightweight and slim fit making it great for rifle and AR shooting. Wish for the price it would have come with a protective case so I purchased a pelican case to keep them safe.

Pro Ears Pro Tac Slim

by ghostrider, from FL, United States Written on September 22, 2015
I own both the Pro Ears Slim and regular electronic earmuffs but like the Slims because they fit and feel better when I am shooting my rifles. I usually spend all day at the range and like the fact that these earmuffs have a NRR of 28 dB and not 24 dB like quite a few of the electronic earmuffs. I use my other Pro Ears, NRR of 30 dB, when shooting indoors.
Pros:
  • NRR of 28 dB
  • Slim shape ear pieces
Cons:
  • None

Pro Tac Slim Gold

by shooter 58, from ID, United States Written on February 5, 2015
These are really high quality muffs. The sound amplification is excellent-very clear, and no background noise.
They very comfortable and don't have the slippery and sweaty vinyl ear cushions and they seem extra padded. No wires all over the place either.
Pros:
  • Made theUSA
  • 5 year warranty
  • clear sounds
Cons:
  • None

Competitive Shooter

by Big Jake, from MN, United States Written on January 14, 2015
Comfortable to wear all day. Excellent hearing protection, the automatic shut off when a shot has been fired is second to none. I have used lower priced electronic hearing protection that I still needed to use foam ear plugs under the ear muffs in order to fully protect my hearing. With the Pro Ears there was no need for any extra ear plugs. I was able to hear range commands and conversation with other shooters at the range. Purchasing these Pro Ears is a no brainer if you are at all concerned about hearing protection.
Pros:
  • None
Cons:
  • none!
